Description:

The file ibmpmsvc.exe has an application name of IBM ThinkPad Power Management Service. The application ibmpmsvc.exe is also called IBM PM Service. Since this file is a part of the IBM power management driver, this file is thus installed on default on IBM ThinkPad notebook computers.

The process ibmpmsvc.exe supports several functions of the IBM notebook, specifically functions that are controlled using the blue Function keys (Fn, F3, F4 and F12). Particularly, these functions control hibernate and standby buttons. Standby mode means turning off components that consume power like hard disk and the monitor. Thus, it is also used because of its capability to switch the system to a low power rate. This mode is similar to a warm boot where any contents of memory and desktop settings that are unsaved are lost. In hibernation mode, a hibernation file exists where the state information of the system is saved and holds the contents of the RAM so when the computer is turned back on, the applications and memory contents are restored to their original state.

The process ibmpmsvc.exe is also known as the Windows 2000/XP service that executes the Advanced Configuration and Power interface or ACPI on IBM ThinkPad laptops. Providing support for the FN+FKEY combinations enables a user not only to go into standby mode but also to perform other functions. Different levels of functional facilities are offered by the useful FN+FKEY key combinations on IBM ThinkPad machines.

In general, the following key combinations provide the following functions on almost all ThinkPad laptops currently available:

The combination FN+F3 turns off the LCD display. A user needs to press any key, or move the mouse to get the display back.

The combination FN+F4 places the laptop into Standby mode. The user needs to press the FN key on its own to wake up the laptop again. This function is also called the Sleep function. The setting for the FN+F4 combination can be changed so that it puts the computer in hibernation mode instead of a sleep mode or so that this combination would shut down the laptop.

For the IBM Thinkpad laptop to go to Hibernation mode, the key combination FN+F12 should be pressed. Holding for 4 seconds the Power button will disable the Hibernation mode and revert the laptop back to its normal state.
