About Globalscape Wide Area File Services
Overview
While working on a Wide Area Network allows users to connect with geographically diverse networks, doing so is often slow and cumbersome. Files often take forever to open and file-overwriting issues are common. Globalscape’s Wide Area File Services solves this problem once and for all! Now, with Wide Area File Services implemented, remote users can connect and access files over the Wide Area Network at Local Area Network speeds.
Features
Wide Area File Services is packed with features that make file sharing across the WAN feel as if you’re on a LAN.
- Security - Data is secured using HTTP/S protocols and 32-bit encryption. Tunneling through HTTP/S makes Wide Area File Services easy to implement on VPNs, through firewalls, or over the Internet.
- Speed and real time replication - Because files are actually accessed locally and changes replicated in real time, file access is lightning fast.
- Newly Added File Access - New files are automatically added to all servers, even before being fully replicated.
- High Availability - Because data is stored locally and synchronized with remote servers, if the network goes down, local users still have access to their files. Once the network is back online, all changes will be automatically synchronized.
- File Locks - When a file is in use, it will be locked while it is being used. Other users can open a read-only copy but cannot make changes to the file until it is unlocked.
- Backups - Because files are stored locally and synchronized with a master file depository, backups are readily available. In fact, the master server keeps multiple versions of files for backup and auditing purposes.
Benefits
All of the features of Wide Area File Services offer end users a seamless - and fast - experience. From the end user’s point of view, files are accessed locally. No training is required nor is any software required on the users’ computers. No matter which data center the file originates from, users have real-time access to it as if it were residing on their local server.
How it works
Wide Area File Services works by storing data on a master repository and then using byte-level differencing to replicate the data at all WAN locations. When a change is made at any location, only the changes are transferred back to the repository. These changes are replicated and pushed to all locations in real time whenever a file is saved.
Recommendations
Wide Area File Services is an ideal solution for keeping branch offices and satellite WANs connected and in sync. With this solution in place, users have access to the files that they need regardless of where they are stored.
