How to turn on Javascript?

Celeste Stewart
We get questions about turning on Javascript quite often.

What is Javascript?

Javascript is a simple programming language that is used by web developers to provide interactive content. For example, when you roll your mouse over text and a popup appears with more information, that is most likely Javascript in action.

Do not confuse Javascript with Java; they are two separate things. Only the first four letters are the same. Sunsets and sunflowers have nothing in common other than the letters “sun.” The same is true of Javascript and Java.

Why isn’t Javascript Turned on?

Your computer’s browser has numerous security levels and settings. Depending on what level you have your browser’s security set to, Javascript may be turned off. If Javascript was previously enabled but you later increased the browser’s security level because of concerns over cookies or other privacy issues, you may have inadvertently disabled Javascript by going to a higher level.

Turning on Javascript in Internet Explorer 7.0

Since so many Web sites use Javascript, having Javascript enabled allows you to get the most out of the Web site’s design. In addition, specific modules may not work if you do not have Javascript enabled. Fortunately, turning on Javascript is super easy. Here’s how:

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools> Internet Options and click on the Security tab. Click the globe icon that represents the Internet and then click on the Custom Level button. Scroll through the listing until you find the Active Scripting section. Most likely, yours has the Disable option selected, right? Change it to either Enable or Prompt.

The “Enable” option allows Javascript to run when encountered while Prompt will warn you and ask your permission before Javascript can run. Go with Enable and you’ll be less likely to encounter frequent warning boxes.

Most Javascript errors look more alarming than they really are and are most often errors on the Web site, not your computer. If after turning on Javascript you find too many “Javascript debugging” errors, go back into Internet Options, click the Advanced tab, scroll through the list to the Browsing section, and select the “Disable Script Debugging (Internet Explorer)” option.
