I forgot my password.
Losing or forgetting a password happens quite a bit - I get these questions all the time. You don’t say where the password goes, so let’s troubleshoot a few different instances for password recovery and see if that will help.
Lost Email Passwords
Most of the time, people lose or forget passwords to their email accounts. This can also happen as the result of someone getting your password either in person or online and changing it on your account. If someone has “hijacked” your email account, unfortunately, there may be little you can do to get it back.
Many email accounts including Hotmail have you set up a secret question or an alternate email address when you open the account. You can click on a link that says “Forgot your Password?” and they will let you reset it using one of these methods. If you didn’t set up a safeguard, there is very little support for free email accounts and you may have no other choice but to start over.
If you have lost your Outlook password, you can reset it by accessing the Administrator on your system. Once you are operating as the Administrator, you can go into the Control Panel, find the User Accounts and then find the account in question. From there, you can change the password for that account and access your email. This method also works if you have lost the password to your user account, but have access to the Administrator account.
Lost Administrative Passwords
If you lose the password to the Windows Administrative account and are using Windows XP, there is a backdoor method for resetting it. We have step by step instructions for accessing this security hole in this Filetonic article. This will work as long as you have the original Windows CD to boot from.
Password Recovery Software
In many cases, password recovery software is the way to go to reset a password. Third party programs such as Office Password Recovery, Password Changer, Spotmau and Password Reset are available to recover passwords depending on your needs. For example, if you password-protected a Microsoft Office document and forgot the password, the Office Password Recovery tool will help you out. Some of these programs will recover your old password and some of them will remove the old password and allow you to set a new one.
For many programs, particularly email accounts, not having a password will prevent you from accessing the system without many workarounds. Because passwords are the first line of defense in a computer’s security system, if you lose or forget it, you may have to abandon the old account and open up a new one.
