I cannot open file 019. Help?
File Extension 019
Numbered file extensions such as file extension 019 are generally part of a larger sequence of a compressed archive that has been split into several smaller files. For example, if you have a 5 MB archive that you need to squeeze onto a series of floppy discs, splitting the file into several smaller files allows you to use a series of floppy discs. Using a utility such as WinRAR would allow you to do this. Instead of having one file named file.rar, you would have several files named file.001, file.002, file.003, and so forth. Usually, file.001 contains the instructions for piecing the remaining files back together and each one will prompt you to insert the next sequential disc.
Problems with Sequential Files
While this process is pretty neat and works most of the time, occasionally a bad disc or file corruption interferes with the process. When this happens, the process stops. After all, if file.019 can’t load, it won’t prompt you for file 020 and the archive cannot be pieced back together.
Opening File Extension 019
Unfortunately, if you have a single .019 file and not the preceding files .001 through .018, it’s unlikely that you’ll have any luck opening this particular file. Likewise, if you have the entire series of files but file.019 is damaged, then none of the files will do you much good.
Steps to Try
If the file.019 that you have is a single file, you can try renaming it with the .000 or .001 extension. This may be enough to trick it into opening, though it’s doubtful. You might also try using different unzip utilities in the hopes of finding one that is able to decompress it. For example, if you’re using WinZip, try WinRAR.
If this file is one of a larger series and you received it from someone else, you might check with the file’s creator to see if another copy is available. If you downloaded the file, try re-downloading it as it’s not uncommon for file corruption to occur during transmissions.
