Formatting HDD for DVR

I want to add a HDD to my DVR but it has to be formatted to FAT32 to work. Seagate told me they do not support FAT 32 as it is unstable and you can easily lose your files - which has happened to me twice. The company I bought the DVR from - Strong - say it's fine to format to FAT32. All the HDDs seem to come in NTFS but this won't work with my DVR. Can anyone give me some advice please? Kate Dubensky

Adding Hard Disk Drives to Digital Video Recorders

If you frequently use your DVR to record programs, the internal hard drive is likely going to fill up quite fast. Adding an external or additional HDD - or hard disk drive - to your digital video recorder will allow you to significantly increase your storage space. It is a good plan to add another hard drive to your system, but you do need to make sure that the components are compatible.

Device and formatting compatibility

If I understand your question correctly, you already have a Seagate HDD and a Strong DVR, and the suggested or required formatting for these devices is incompatible? It sounds like your Seagate HDD is not able to support FAT32 formatting and that the Seagate DVR requires it. If this is indeed the case, it sounds like you will need to decide which of the two devices to replace.

NTFS vs FAT32

If you want to continue with the addition of the HDD, it is probably a good idea to replace your DVR and go with a manufacturer that supports NTFS, as it is the most common and widely supported format. NTFS - or New Technology File System - is the file system used in Windows operating system since Windows NT, when it replaced the FAT system. Introduced in 1993, NTFS improved upon the FAT32 model and is thought to offer increased support and superior performance.

Replacing devices for compatibility

Whenever buying additional hardware or software, it is always imperative to ensure compatibility. If the manufacture says that a particular program or format is not supported, it means that it is unable to work on their product. Regardless of different opinions about the stability of FAT32, in this case it is simply not an option for your DVR.
