Sudden Problems After New Hardware is Installed

If you start to see problems like crashing and poor performance right after a piece of new hardware has been installed device drivers are most likely to blame.  In some cases the problem may be that the device driver is corrupt, while in other cases the driver may be conflicting with existing hardware or software.  In other cases the device driver may already be outdated, even if the hardware has just been installed.  If you start to see problems following the installation of new hardware it is important to head over to the manufacturer’s website.  In some cases the source of the problem will already have been identified and corrected with the release of a brand new device driver.  Downloading the updated driver may solve the problem and allow the new hardware to function as intended.

NVIDIA Drivers: Where to Get and How to Install 

You’ve recently had to reformat your hard drive, install your operating system, and you’ve lost the installation disk for your NVIDIA video card. Or, you just want to upgrade to the latest drivers for your card. Doing either of these can be easier than you think, and can be done in a matter of minutes.

Which NVIDIA Video Card

If the device is not already installed, it will be necessary to remember the NVIDIA type of video card you have. Was it a GeForce, GeForce M/Go, Quadro, nForce, Tesla, or a Legacy? If none of these sound familiar to you, you may want to go digging through all your old paperwork for the manual, or even the invoice.

Go to the NVIDIA website, click ‘Download Drivers’ right under the company logo. On the drivers download page you will have two options. The first is to manually search for the drivers you need. With this choice you will need to know the product type, product series, your operating system, and choose the language.

The NVIDIA Website

Choose your options, and then click the search button. When the next page appears, look for your driver. For example: You have a GeForce 5 FX series video card. Click search, and on the next you’ll see the driver details, size of download, and the version number. Below that, under the Release Highlights tab, you’ll notice that the driver also supports the GeForce 6, 7, 8, and 9 series GPUs (Graphics Processing Unit).

Read the NVIDIA Software License Agreement, check the box which states that you agree, and click the Download Now button. Depending on your internet connection speed, this could take a while.

With Windows XP or Vista you may see a drop down security box. Right click it, and then click on Download file. You’ll then get a pop up box which asks you whether you want to Run the file from its current location, Save it to your hard drive, or Cancel. (On older Windows operating systems the options are the same except there won’t be a security warning.)

If you have a fast connection, choose the Run option. This will install the drivers on your computer directly from the NVIVIA website. Please note: If you’re using Windows Vista, you will also have to have administrator privileges, and click to continue.

Saving it to your hard drive will save you time later if you make a drivers CD for your computer. Doing this will require you to double-click the installation exe file, and then you will need to follow directions from there on.

Alternatively you can Find and Update NVIDIA Drivers Automatically

The second option, new to the NVIDIA website and still in prerelease, is to automatically find the drivers. This option may not work for you until the official release. NVIDIA makes a wide variety of graphics cards and motherboards, so you will have to choose whether to download the graphics drivers (In the case of a video card), and the motherboard drivers (If you have a motherboard with an NVIDIA chipset).

In the event you can’t find information about your NVIDIA graphics card because it came as part of a major retailer’s system (Dell or eMachines for example), click the support button at the top-right of the screen. Look to the left of the screen, and click Hardware Support. You will be presented with two options there. Click the More Info button under the one which states that your NVIDIA graphics card or motherboard came as part of a computer purchase. Click the type of computer you have, and then follow the directions from there.

After installing your new drivers, rebooting your computer, and setting up the options you want, go and have fun on your computer.

Whenever a new operating system is introduced, an inevitable problem crops up: your hardware doesn’t work. For example, if you recently upgraded to Vista, you may find that your trusty HP printer won’t print.

This is true of when upgrading an existing machine or buying a brand-new machine with Vista already installed.

The problem is most difficult for those who are upgrading their computer rather than those who are buying a new one off the shelf. Upgraders have far more hardware to find Vista drivers for than new purchasers. For example, the motherboard, video adapter, display adapter, CD and DVD-ROM drives, sound cards, hard disk, USB host controllers, keyboard, mouse, and every other piece of hardware must have compatible Vista drivers in order for the computer to run Vista.

Computer users who are buying a new machine have the basics already taken care of though they will likely run into issues with their peripherals like printers, scanners, digital cameras, and external storage devices.

For those who are considering upgrading to Vista, it’s critical that they thoroughly analyze their hardware for compatibility with Windows Vista and obtaining the required Vista drivers before doing so. Microsoft provides an upgrade advisor to help you determine if your computer is ready for Vista or not here:

This upgrade advisor scans your Windows XP computer and creates an inventory of your hardware and software as well as lists known compatibility issues and advice. Use this report to determine whether upgrading to Vista and getting the appropriate Vista drivers makes sense. In many cases, the hardware won’t have Vista drivers available and you will need to replace the device. Keep this in mind as the costs can add up quickly.

Device manufacturers have been releasing Vista drivers for their products so that users don’t necessarily have to go out and buy all new peripherals just because they bought a new Vista computer. If your peripherals don’t work when you install them on your new Vista computer, you’ll need to check to see if Vista drivers have been released yet.

For example, if you have an HP printer, go to HP’s website and search for updated drivers. When entering your search terms, try entering both your product name as well as Vista. Most manufacturers have specific areas dedicated to addressing Vista concerns.

Once you’ve found the device’s Vista drivers, download them and use Device Manager to install them on your Vista machine. Device Manager can be found under the System icon in Control Panel. It shows a list of all devices (except printers and scanners – those are listed in Control Panel). Double-click the device that you are upgrading to a Vista Driver and click on Update Driver. Browse the computer to the driver’s location and install it following the prompts that come up on the screen. Reboot the computer.

If you’re upgrading your XP machine to Vista, you should download the Vista drivers and burn them to CD so that you’ll have them available after you install the new operating system.

If your devices do not have updated Vista drivers, see if you can find out if the manufacturer intends to release any updates. On older products, they may not. You might be able to try a generic Vista driver and see if that works; otherwise, you’ll need to buy a new device.

When buying new devices, look for either the “Certified for Windows Vista” or “Works with Windows Vista” logos.
