Apparently a lot of users are having problems installing MSN properly. Unfortunately, I can’t go directly to the official source for MSN Premium support to find MSN’s recommendation because I am not a subscriber to the service. However, I did find some advice on a few user forums. I’ll do my best to point you in the right direction.

Contact your ISP for a CD

If MSN Premium is a part of your ISP’s offerings, you can ask for an installation CD which may work out better as far as installing the software. However, this may not solve the Internet connection issue.

Connect Directly to the Internet

If you have broadband Internet access and are connected via a hub, router, or through a serial connection through other devices, try accessing the Internet directly through your cable or DSL modem. Apparently, a direct connection has solved this issue for other users.  Alternately, you might try a dialup connection for the installation tasks if you have a dialup modem and a dialup account. (Sign up for a free dialup account temporarily and see if that works).

Download the Correct Version for Your Operating System

If you have Windows Vista, you’ll need to make sure that you have version 9.5 or above as earlier versions are not fully compatible with the Vista operating system. The following link, http://membercenter.msn.com/download.aspx, should have the most current version available.

Disable your Internet Security Software

If connecting directly to the Internet doesn’t do the trick, stay connected using your direct connection, but this time, disable your Internet security software and firewall (temporarily of course). Occasionally, security software and firewalls become overzealous when it comes to allowing Internet programs to control your computer. It’s possible that the software or firewall is blocking the MSN installation wizard from communicating with the MSN servers which is then causing an Internet connection failure message.

Hopefully one of these suggestions will help. If not, you might post your query on the Microsoft Discussion Groups forum. They have an area dedicated to MSN Premium, though I didn’t find any data related to this problem.

How can I enable Javascript on Windows 2000?

Kat DelongWithout a little more information, I’m going to have to start from the beginning, so forgive me if some of these instructions are fairly basic. Java and Javascript are often used interchangeably but are two distinct beasts. I’ll discuss each.

Enabling Javascript

To enable Javascript, it’s not so much the operating system as it is the Web browser version that is involved. In Internet Explorer 7.0, go to Tools> Internet Options and click on the Security tab. Choose the Custom Level button and then browse the list until you find “Active Scripting.” Click the enable button.

Instructions are similar for Firefox, though the wording is a bit different. Go to Tools> Options and click on the Contents tab. Now, look for “Enable Javascript” and make sure that option is enabled.

Java Downloads

Java is software that enables users to run programs that were designed for a basic “virtual machine” to run on real world computers. It will allow you to play online games, chat and view 3-D images.

If you haven’t tried to download Java at all, it’s easy. Just go to the website and click on the button to Java download for Windows 2000. This will load on your machine and then you just need to restart it for it to take effect. If you’re not sure if Java is loaded on your machine, or you want to see what version you are running, go here and it will automatically analyze your system: Java test site.

Windows Service Pack

If you have tried to load Java and are getting errors, I have a few suggestions. The first thing to check is that you have downloaded Windows Service Pack 4. This download should eliminate many Java errors.

RegCure

A program like RegCure can help you eliminate Javascript errors. Try downloading this programs and see if your Java is working.

Security Issues

You may be having a problem with Java due to your security settings or it may be disabled through your browser. Make sure your security is set to allow Java to run. If you have Internet Explorer, you can check it by:

  1. Going to Tools, then Options and Internet Options window.
  2. Choose Security. Look for Microsoft VM Java permissions. Make sure “disable Java” isn’t selected.

Unfortunately, the System Restore feature isn’t available on Windows 2000. This feature in XP and Vista will enable you to roll the system back to a point where it was operational if the Java problem is new. There is a fix for future issues by downloading

MSCONFIG for Windows 2000. Unfortunately, using this now isn’t going to help with this particular Java issue.

As a last resort, I’m going to suggest that you consider upgrading to Windows Vista. For about $100 for the home basic edition, you will have much more security and versatility - and Java that will run whenever you want.

If these suggestions aren’t solving your problem, give us some more specifics and we can try to help you further. Have you tried to download Java and got an error message? What error are you getting? Hopefully, one of these ideas will allow Javascript and/or Java to run on your Windows 2000 machine.

Kat DelongYou probably know what I’m going to say - you need to upgrade your operating system. Windows Millennium was introduced by Microsoft in 2000 and its popularity was short lived. Plagued by complaints from users for its unreliability and instability, it was quickly replaced by Windows XP. PC World even placed the Millennium as number four on its list of the Worst Tech Products of All Time in 2006. As you can guess, Windows Millennium is no longer supported by Microsoft.

Upgrade to Vista

My best advice is to upgrade to Windows Vista. You can find information on Vista at the Microsoft website here. You can download an upgrade advisor that will tell you if your system is ready to run Windows Vista. For about $100 for the basic edition, your PC will run faster and work better than any fixes we can prescribe here for Millennium.

Empty the Cache

That said, there are a few things you can try to get your Internet to work better with your PC and the current Millennium system. The first thing to do is to empty the Internet cache:

  1. Go to Tools and the Internet Options, and Delete Files.
  2. Choose Delete all offline content.
  3. Click Ok.

Reset Default Browser

Depending on which service pack you are using for Millennium, you may or may not have access, but if you can, it might make your hyperlinks work better by allowing the system to see your browser.

  1. Go to Start and then Set Program Access & Defaults.
  2. Select Custom.
  3. Click the arrow to see options and select the browser you want to use.
  4. Click Ok.
  5. Restart the system and see if your hyperlinks are working.

Edit HOST File

You might be able to get better Internet performance by editing the HOST file. There is a thorough Microsoft.com site that will walk you through editing the HOST file, but this is for advanced users and involves getting into the registry, so it is not for the faint of heart, which I why I’m not going to detail it here.

I hope one of these options helps, but ultimately I think you’re going to have to bite the bullet and upgrade your operating system.

Kate DubenskyInternet Page Load Errors

Run an Updated Virus Scan

Hmm, this sounds a little suspicious if you can see the page load before the error message pops up. I would start by running a virus scan because it is possible that there is a malware program such as a Trojan or worm interfering with your web browsing. Some malware programs, especially Spyware, are designed to monitor the user’s Internet use and record passwords and user names. It is possible that the error message you are receiving is related to a malware problem.

If you have recently made any changes to your system, such as downloading any new, unverified applications, you might consider removing them now. So, first of all, update your anti-virus definitions by visiting the manufacturer’s website and looking for any recent releases. Once your program is updated, run the scan, isolating and removing any problems. You should then run the scan again, to make sure that any glitches have been dealt with.

Check your Router Password and Connection

Once you have a clean bill of health from a virus scan, you can investigate some other possible causes of this error message. It is possible that there is a password on your router that is inhibiting the transmission of web pages, especially if you are using a wireless router. You can open your router settings and remove the password, if there is one.

Remove Cookies and Temporary Internet Files

The next thing to try is deleting all your stored cookies and temporary Internet files. Sometimes saved data can interfere with pages loading properly. Before you remove cookies and cached files you should make sure that you have all your user names and passwords stored, because they will be removed from the various pages that they are entered on.

To remove cookies and clear temporary Internet files in Internet Explorer:

  1. Find and select the Tools tab from your browser page
  2. Choose Internet Options, then Temporary Internet Files
  3. Choose to Delete Cookies and then choose to Delete Files

To remove cookies and clear temporary Internet files in Firefox:

  1. Find and select Tools from the browser task bar
  2. Choose Options, then Privacy
  3. Choose Clear for Cookies and Cache

If All Else Fails… Contact your Internet Service Provider

If your problems continue after taking these steps, you might consider contacting your Internet Service Provider and making sure that there isn’t a problem with your IP address. Periodically, there can be problems with the configuration of your computer with the network. Check that your connection speed is optimal and that there aren’t any problems on your ISP’s end.

Susan KeenanThe AutoFill Icon

The AutoFill icon or tab on the Google Toolbar options is designed to allow users to input their personal information for later use. The information is securely stored and used to automatically fill in forms on the Web.

Personal data such as credit card information is encrypted. It is also protected by a password that is set by the user. The information remains on your computer and is not sent to Google or anywhere that you do not elect to use it.

You will be able to tell whether you can use the AutoFill function on a specific Web page because the AutoFill button is enabled if you are visiting a Web page that has fields that this feature can be used for. If no fields exist that you can fill with the AutoFill feature, the AutoFill button will not be enabled and typically, it will be gray in coloring at this point.

How to Edit the AutoFill Information

To edit information in the AutoFill feature, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the AutoFill Settings tab.
  2. Edit your information simply by typing in the new information in the proper fields.

How to Edit the AutoFill Information for Credit Card Information

In the event that you want to change the information on your credit card, you need to navigate to the AutoFill options tab and select “Add/Edit Credit Card.” This will allow you to edit your personal information.

How to Edit the AutoFill Information for Credit Card Information without the Password

If you have forgotten the password that is attached to your credit card information that has been stored with the AutoFill feature, don’t worry because you can still edit the info.

Follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the AutoFill options tab.
  2. Select “Add/Edit Credit Card.”
  3. Select “Forgot Password.”
  4. The AutoFill feature automatically clears the data so that you can reenter it.
