How to remove a virus from a cell phone?

Kate DubenskyRemove a Virus from your Cell Phone

About Cell Phone Viruses

Getting a virus on your cell phone needs to be dealt with the same way as a virus on your computer, with a good antivirus program. There are a number of cell phone antivirus programs on the market these days, made by companies like Trend Micro http://www.trendmicro.com/, F-Secure http://www.f-secure.com/, Kaspersky Lab http://www.kaspersky.com/, and Symantec http://www.symantec.com/.

About the CommWarrior MMS Virus

There is a strain of cell phone virus called CommWarrior that was unique for its ability to replicate itself through Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS), text messages that include a picture, video or audio file and are sent via email. Prior to the launch of the CommWarrior virus in 2005, cell phone viruses were transmitted through messages sent via Bluetooth and were confined to relatively small areas and few devices.

Manual Removal of the CommWarrior Virus

If you have a variant of the CommWarrior virus, there is a manual fix that you can perform to clean your phone. Depending on your phone model, check your user manual to find out how to access and use the Application Manager, or download a third party application manager tool. Open the list of running applications and select the CommWarrior entry. Highlight the entry and choose to terminate and cancel the program. You can also remove the stopped application by downloading a file explorer then removing any CommWarrior associated entries. There is also an antivirus program designed specifically for this virus that you can download and run on your phone.

Take Reasonable Precautions Against Cell Phone Viruses

Other cell phone viruses are transmitted through MMS messages via Bluetooth. These messages are less dangerous because they can only reach a smaller number of devices in a small area. It is also important to follow the same rules with your cell phone as you do with your computer: don’t download pirated or unconfirmed programs, and be careful when opening unknown attachments, especially those that look like spam.

Flash - Format - your Cell Phone

If you can’t get the virus off your cell phone with an antivirus program, you can also format your cell phone. Flashing your cell phone will have the same results as reformatting your computer and will remove all of your saved information, so be sure to back up or record all your information. Check in your user manual to find the instructions to flash your cell phone model, also called a factory reset.

Fix Java midlet error for cellular HTC PPC6800

How can I get better Java for cellular HTC PPC6800? I get “midlet error” when opening a JAD or JAR file.

Kate DubenskyEnhancing Java Capabilities on a Cell Phone2

Java Programs for HTC PPC 6800

There are a number of options for you to download that can enhance your experience opening MIDlet files, both Java Runtime programs and web browsers that are specially formulated to run Java programs, games, and other visual images on your mobile phone.

I’m not sure which Java program you are currently running on your phone, but HTC has issued a ROM upgrade for your phone model, PPC 6800, version 3.52.671.9 that would likely be a quick and easy enhancement for your phone.

About MIDlet, JAR and JAD Files

JAD - Java Application Descriptor Files - are informative files that describe MIDlet file contents. MIDlet files are a type of Java program that are most often used to store and transfer Java applications and games for cell phones. MIDlets include a JAD file as well as a JAR - Java Archive File. Both Java Runtime and web browsers that are Java equipped should be able to open and run MIDlets.

About Opera Mini and Java

In your search for the best Java Runtime program for use on your cell phone you might consider the Opera Mini, which is reputably the best web browser available for Windows-equipped mobile devices. While Opera Mini is a Java-enhanced browser rather than a specific Java program, Opera Mini is designed for mobile phone use and is especially compatible with your cell phone since HTC included a Java Midlet Manager. This is an extremely popular choice and a highly rated program among users.

The Latest Version of Opera Mini

The latest version of Opera Mini Mobile 9.5 beta was released on October 20, 2008 and is fitted with the latest in mobile Internet browsing. This program claims to provide the best and most reliable Java-enhanced browsing and support.

Other Java Options for Your Cell Phone

All HTC pocket PCs are pre-installed with the Intent Midlet Manager, or Intent MM, known to be the best midlet environment available for these devices. The Websphere Everyplace Micro Environment - known as IBM J9 - is another option, but is thought to be slower and weaker than other options.

How do I get pictures off my phone to my MocoSpace?

Susan KeenanWhat is MocoSpace?

MocoSpace is brainchild of a company that provides a social network that is accessible to mobile phone users. This service includes a variety of features and has grown in popularity over the years. These features include the opportunity to chat, share videos, and share photos with any other MocoSpace users. It also features microblogging. It is one of the many ways that mobile phone users can stay connected with others like them.

How to Load Pictures from Mobile Phone to MocoSpace

Sharing user generated content is nothing new. You can upload your pictures directly onto the PC version of MocoSpace or by email. To upload your photos onto the PC version, simply connect your phone to the computer and select the photos that you want to upload. To do so from your mobile phone, send yourself an email to the email address that you used when you signed up for MocoSpace.

Specifications for Pictures

Mocospace has a few requirements when it comes to uploading pictures onto their site. Pictures files can be .png, .gifs, or .jpg. However, none of the pictures should be more than 300KB.

The uploaded photos cannot include violence, profanity, or nudity in them. Moreover, copyrighted materials are prohibited as are offensive materials.

What Happens to Pictures That Are Placed on MocoSpace?

Once the photos are added to MocoSpace, they are resized to thumbnails. The original aspect ratio and the quality of the photo are retained in the thumbnail. If you view the photos from your mobile phone, you will only be able to see the resized images. However, when you view the photos on your computer, you will be able to click on any one of the thumbnails in order to view the original picture.

Kat DelongThe short answer is maybe, depending on what is causing the slowdown. Running slowly is a common complaint of many iPhone users, so if it is just a standard slow operation, there is probably not much you can do about it. If your slowdown is caused by an older version of the program or your phone constantly updating the error reporting, you might be able to speed it up a little bit.

Mobile Carriers Fault

According to a survey by Wired magazine, many of the speed issues are the fault of the mobile carriers that lack the 3G networks need by iPhone. In addition, many iPhone blogs report that mobile device processors aren’t fast enough to support most Flash sites, which will cause a major slowdown.

Update iPhone

The best way to be sure you are running at the fastest speeds and with the best fixes is to use the latest version of iPhone. Apple claims the 2.1 software update will increase speeds, reduce time to backup to iTunes, better battery life and decrease dropped calls among other fixes. You need to connect your iPhone to your computer, go to iTunes 8 and choose “Check for Updates.”

Turn Off Error Reporting

Your iPhone is constantly sending error reports which can slow it down. To stop your phone from automatically sending these reports, follow these steps:

  1. Right click on iTunes and choose “Reset Warnings.”
  2. The next time you use it, you will get a box asking if you want to send reports. Find “Do Not Ask Me Again” and uncheck it. Click on “Don’t Send.”

Disable Diagnostic Data Sending

If you are finding the iPhone slow when you are synching it, you can follow these steps to speed it up:

  1. Connect the iPhone to your computer.
  2. Open iTunes and select iPhone.
  3. You will see “Automatically synch when this phone is connected.” Uncheck this box.
  4. Unplug the iPhone, the plug it right back in again.
  5. Select iPhone again and right click on it. Choose “Reset Warnings.”
  6. Synch the iPhone. You will see a pop up message. Uncheck the box and select “Don’t Send.”

These suggestions may get you an increase in speed. If not, the best you can do is wait until the next iPhone update and see if it is working better.

Pairing bluetooth devices

I have an UTStarcom model CDM1450 cell phone and a Motorola H500 Bluetooth headset and no matter what I try I can’t get them to pair up, what should I do?

Kate DubenskyPossible Hardware Problem

There really isn’t any reason that the two devices shouldn’t be pairing up, as long as the cell phone is supported by the headset requirements. There is conflicting information floating around about whether the headset that you have is able to recognize a 1.1 Bluetooth capability. It might require a 1.2 capability, which your phone may or may not be equipped with. Check the user manuals for both items and check their compatibilities first. If your phone is equipped with 1.2 Bluetooth capability, or if your headset recognizes 1.1, or both, then technically they should be pairing. It is possible that there is a hardware problem that will prevent one or the other from working, but first let’s review the steps that you’ve taken.

Pairing Procedures

The procedure to pair your phone and headset might vary be a little different depending on the particulars of the models, but are relatively straightforward.

Charged and Ready

  • Make sure that both your phone and your headset are fully charged. On the headset there is a small button that you need to press to prepare the headset for synching. Press and hold the button down for a few seconds. When you let go there is a signal that the process is complete - usually a flashing light or a sound - or check your manual to see how to tell when its ready.

Confirm Bluetooth is Turned on

  • On your phone open the menu for your Options and confirm that Bluetooth is turned on for wireless. Next, select the option to add a new device. If you can’t find this category, check your phone’s user manual.

Let Phone Search for Devices

  • The phone will now search for devices around it that are Bluetooth enabled and present a list of names. Select the right device and then, if prompted, enter the code, which is often 0000 or else check the manual for this information, then select OK.

This should do it. If the phone still can’t detect the headset you could try another phone to see where the problem is and, if none of this works, then you might have a broken or defective headset, or a problem with the Bluetooth connectivity from your phone.
