Kate DubenskyNorton Antivirus Software

Since you say that you uninstalled your old Norton Professional Security program, I think that you probably used Windows Add/Remove to delete the program, but that some files are still hanging around. If the Norton Professional that your computer is failing to locate is not the Norton program that you thought you removed, then it’s possible that you inadvertently allowed the program to install via the Internet. Norton and Symantex programs are infamous for being hard to remove, most likely a security guarantee most of the time, until you want to get rid of them intentionally.

Use a Registry Scanner to find and resolve problems

If you have tried searching for Norton files and not found any, then you might next want to try a registry scan and edit. Your computer’s registry is a log of all the applications and executions that you run on your system and, in time, the registry can become cluttered with old and irrelevant bits of information. We recommend a registry scan called RegCure that will clean your registry and remove any unnecessary bits of code.

Norton Removal Tool

To remove the program, if these other possibilities fail, you can download a program removal tool from Symantec here. This page offers a range of detailed steps depending on the version of Norton that you are running. The Norton removal tool will get rid of a failed or corrupt installation.

Steps to use Norton Removal Tool

Once you download the Norton/Symantec removal tool the program will load an icon on your desktop. Close all the other programs that you have open, including your Internet browser, so either print or record this page. Click the icon twice to launch the program. Follow the guide that opens and complete the instructions. If asked, restart your computer. Now, remove the tool icon by dragging it to your recycle bin. Next, open your Start Menu, then search All Programs for any Norton files. If there are any, remove them. This should work to get rid of the program and you can then load your new Norton program.

Remote Technical Assistance

If you are still having difficulties, or if these steps are unsuccessful to remove the old Norton program, you might consider seeking remote support. At Filetonic, we recommend the assistance offered here. These technicians are available to discuss your problem live, and guide you through the issue.

Kat DelongA Java virtual machine is just the interpretation of the Java code for a computer’s processor so that it can run specific Java instructions. There may be a few reasons why your Java download isn’t showing on your notebook. You might have an incomplete download of the update or it isn’t enabled on your browser. You can test what Java you are running on your notebook by clicking on this Java link. It will look at your system and show you what has been installed.

Manually Download Java

You can also try a Java manual download by clicking on the link. Once you’ve clicked on the download button, you will click on the correct operating system tab. Then choose a folder location for the download and save to your desktop. The download may ask you if you want to replace a previously installed version. If so, click yes. Close the browser and then look for the Java icon on your desktop. Double click on the icon to start the new download.

Enable Java

If you know that Java is installed on your computer, but you are still getting an error message when you try to play your game, you may need to enable it on your web browser. There are a few different ways to do this, depending on which browser you are using.

  • For Internet Explorer, go to Tools, then Internet Options and the click on Advanced. Scroll down to Java and select the box next to it. Choose Security and then Custom Level. Scroll to ‘Scripting of Java applets’ and be sure that there is a check next to Enable. Click Ok.
  • For Mozilla, find the menu bar and select Edit. Go to Preferences and then click on Advanced. Check ‘Enable Java’ and then click Ok.
  • For Firefox, go to Tools and then choose Options. In the dialog box, choose Options. Click on Web Features and then select ‘Enable Java’.

As long as you download a complete version of Java and make sure it is enabled on your browser, you should be able to play games that require that platform.

Kat DelongCongratulations on your new laptop. You’ll probably find it very convenient and may start neglecting your trusty desktop. Transferring your files is a great idea, but unfortunately, Outlook Express doesn’t provide a very easy way of doing that. Not to worry, there are ways to copy files to your USB as you have been doing and some techs have come up with software that makes that transfer even easier.

Transfer Mail and Favorites

The only thing you have to really know in order to transfer files to your USB is where the files are located. You may already know how to do this, but I’m going to lay it out anyway:

  1. Go to Start and then My Computer.
  2. Choose the C: drive and scroll down to choose Documents and Settings.
  3. Click on the folder that has your name on it. In this folder, you will see the subfolder called Favorites. Right click on it with your mouse. Choose Copy. Minimize that window and then find a blank spot on your desktop. Right click on your mouse and choose Paste. You will then see an icon for Favorites that you can copy easily to your USB flash drive.
  4. The process is the same for your mail folders. When you are in your folder, choose Application Data and then Microsoft. Click on that and you will see the address book. Save this folder to your desktop in the same way you did for your Favorites.

Backup Software

If you want both your laptop and desktop to be more in synch, you can try one of a number of software programs that have been designed to do just that. These make it easy to transfer everything from Outlook Express including your favorites, address book, settings and signatures. You install the program on both computers and you will be able to back everything up into one file. Two to try are NSoftware Auto Outlook Express backup and Easy Backup for Outlook Express. Most programs have a 30-day trial period before you have to pay for it, which average about $30. You can Google ‘Outlook Express Backup Software’ to find other examples that you can choose from.

Run Antivirus Programs

Although most software that is available for download is free from malware, you want to make sure that you are running a quality antivirus program before you bring things onto your computer. It is also a good idea to set a System Restore point on both computers in case anything goes wrong. This is like a picture of your computer, so that if you have problems you basically can go back in time to this point. Most newer systems do this automatically, but it doesn’t hurt to check. Do this by clicking on Start and then Programs and choosing Accessories. Open System Tools. Choose Start System Restore and then pick the option for Setting a System Restore Point. Click Next. It will then ask you to name the restore point - you will choose the day before you install any new programs. Click Next. You can name the restore point for easy reference if you want. Click Create and then choose Close.

Hopefully this will help you do the transfers the easy way. If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

Susan KeenanIf you have a virus on your computer, you need to remove it from the system. Since the virus that is on your computer has already taken over your Norton application, this is most likely the reason your new version won’t load and run either. I know that you say that you cannot use System Restore, but, I would like you to read what I have to say and try it once more. Then the next strategy is to attempt to remove this virus and any others full force.

Have you tried going into Safe Mode and then using the System Restore utility? Have you increased the allotted disk space for it? If not, do so now.

Boot Up Using Last Known Good Configuration

Turn the power on, press the F8 key on the keyboard. Select “Last Known Good Configuration,” and press the enter button.

Preparation for Using System Restore

Most viruses are real resource hogs. They take up a lot of the computer resources, preventing other applications from working at all. Therefore, viruses can prevent System Restore from working for you. You can get around this by increasing the allotted disk space for it. To increase the disk space, follow this path: Start→ Control Panel→ Performance and Maintenance→ System→ System Properties. Once you access the dialog box for System Properties, increase the allotted disk space by changing the indicator on the System Restore tab. Click “OK.”

Using System Restore

Now try to use System Restore once again by following this path: Start→ All Programs→ Accessories→ System Tools→ System Restore. Select “Restore my computer to an earlier time,” and select next. Follow the prompts until you get to the end.

Scan for Viruses

Even if you aren’t successful restoring your computer system at this point, you can still scan for viruses. Since you have already paid for Norton Security, I am going to suggest a couple of free software applications that you can use to scan your computer. I have used them myself over the years and they do work. All other applications should be closed whenever you are scanning your computer.

One that I can recommend is Ad-Aware from Lavasoft. This anti-spyware program is excellent at ridding your computer of unwanted applications such as adware and spyware. If you decide to download this application, download the free version. You can also download AVG. This is the one that I recommend that you get. It is another resource hog though so it will slow things down when in use.

Reinstall Java

At this point, if all has gone well, you can try to resurrect Java from the Recycle Bin or you can complete a fresh installation.

Susan KeenanBrowsing the forums has led me to the same conclusion that the Kiwee toolbar might be responsible for problems with MSN Hotmail. It’s important to understand that certain system requirements must be met when using Kiwee features.

Why the Kiwee Toolbar?

Many people have downloaded the Kiwee toolbar not just for its search feature, but also, for its usefulness in inserting winks, emoticons, and graphic text directly into IM chats or web pages. It’s a neat idea; unfortunately, a few quirks still need to be worked out.

System Requirements for Kiwee

If you are using any of the Kiwee features without having the proper system requirements, you are bound to run into a few problems. In general, the Kiwee website and its features require at least Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher or the latest version of Firefox. Ideally, the operating system should be Windows XP or Mac OS 10.4 or higher. Kiwee has not yet tested its products with Microsoft Windows Vista, so you might have problems there as well.

Kiwee features work best when Macromedia Flash 7 or higher has been installed. Macromedia Flash 8 is required for the Kiwee postcard Maker. For winks, backgrounds, and emoticons, you should have Windows Live Messenger.

Using the Kiwee Toolbar with MSN Hotmail

The Kiwee toolbar can be used with MSN Hotmail. However, it is important that you set your email account to HTML formatting in order for it to work properly.

Uninstall the Kiwee Toolbar

If you decide that the toolbar is responsible for your problems, you can remove it. It’s simple to uninstall the Kiwee toolbar. Once you do so, the problems should go away. Follow these directions to uninstall:

1)      Click Start.

2)      Access the Control Panel.

3)      Click the Add/Remove Programs utility.

4)      Select the Kiwee toolbar from among the listed applications.

5)      Click Remove.

6)      Follow the prompts for the Kiwee Toolbar uninstaller.

Kate DubenskyWhat is a Hard Disk?

First things first, a hard disk is another way of referring to a hard drive. When it comes to disks and drives, the disk is the thing that you store your data on - like a CD - and the drive is the thing that reads the data - like a CD player.

Black Screen Errors

If you have a black screen, and nothing else, you might have a hard disk crash. This can happen if the computer shuts down improperly, or if there is a corrupt file in its start up sequence. The hard disk drive is part of the computer, inside and not something that you interface with directly. On the other hand, there are other drives, such as CD/DVD drives, as well as older-fashioned floppy disk drives and newer UBS flash drives.

The first reason why your computer might be stuck and asking for a boot disk is if there is a CD or DVD in the disk drive. When there is a disk in the drive, the computer might think that you want it to boot from the original operating system installation disk, and might be trying to read the disk in the drive. Make sure that all the drives are empty, and then power down and boot back up.

Adjusting BIOS

If this doesn’t solve the problem, you might need to adjust the BIOS. Power the computer down again and, this time when you turn the computer on, press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will open and allow you to change your boot sequence to the C:/ drive. By setting the computer to boot from disk C, you are telling it to start up from the hard drive, where all the information that it needs is saved. The computer stores all your permanent information on the hard drive, including the information that it need to know how to turn itself on, how to find the operating system, and how to prepare itself for use. An extra tip - when you are adjusting the BIOS, don’t set or enter a password. If you enter a BIOS password, and ever forget it, you will never be able to get past this step.
