Email Attachment Limit

em>I have been unsuccessful in attaching 24 photos to e-mail. Is there a limit to the number of attachments per e-mail?Celeste Stewart

Email Attachments and ISPs

It’s not so much the number of photos as it is the file size of the collection as a whole. Whether you send twenty four 1 MB photos or one 24 MB photo, the end result is the same in the eyes of the ISP - 24 MB of data that needs to go through their server.

Many ISP limit the file size per email as large file sizes require more system resources than small ones. If you are using a free email service, you will likely see a lower limit than if you are using a paid service. Likewise, dialup email accounts tend to have lower limits than their broadband counterparts. After all, trying to send 24 megabytes of data over a telephone line is a completely different experience than sending that same amount over a cable or DSL connection.

Not only do you have your own ISP limits to be concerned with, you also have the ISP of your recipient to consider. You may have a generous limit but if your recipient’s ISP has a lower limit, then your images won’t land in your recipient’s inbox.

Time Limits

In addition to the file size limits, your email application may be set up with too short of a timeout time. For example, if your email application has a timeout limit of one minute before it disconnects and you are trying to send a group of photos that is expected to take five minutes, your application will timeout before the message is successfully sent. The same is true of your recipient. If your recipient’s timeout setting is too short, the application will timeout before the message is fully downloaded.

To change the timeout settings, go to Tools > Accounts and click on your mail account. Click on Properties. Click on the Advanced tab. Under Server Timeouts, adjust the slider bar to a longer setting.

Alternatives to Sending Bulk Photos

If you don’t want to go through the hassles of tweaking your email application, you have other options. You can send a series of email messages, each with a smaller batch of photos or you could use a photo sharing service. With photo sharing services, which are generally free, you upload your photos to a website where you can add captions, create albums, and more. From there, you send a link to your recipient. Your recipient can then click the link, view your photos, download photos, or even order prints.

I can receive emails, but cannot reply or send emails. Help?

Troubleshooting Email Send ErrorsCeleste Stewart

The first step in troubleshooting email send and reply errors is to determine if the problem is related to the outgoing email settings or if it has something to do with a “stuck” message. If your email program has sent messages successfully in the past, it’s more likely that something else is interfering with sending but it doesn’t hurt to double-check the outgoing email settings to be sure that all is well.

Checking Outgoing Email Settings

First, check with your ISP to find out exactly how the settings should be set up. In fact, you may need to go into your email client and tweak your settings if you used the email setup wizard to initially set up your account. That’s because the setup wizard covers the basic setup steps and many ISPs have additional requirements. Once you have the information you need (it’s usually available on the ISP’s Web site), open your email client and make the corrections. The steps vary slightly from one application to the next but they’re similar. Using Windows Live Mail as an example, you would go to Tools > Accounts and then click on the email account in the list. Once highlighted, you’d click on Properties and then on the Servers tab.

In the Server Information / Outgoing mail (SMTP) section, check to be sure that the server address matches the server address from your ISP exactly. One misplaced period is enough to cause an email send error. Next, make sure that the Outgoing Mail Server / My server requires authentication section is filled out based on your ISP’s requirements. If your ISP requires authentication, place a check in the box and click Settings. Enter your credentials.

Checking for Stuck Email Messages

If your email previously worked fine, then check your outbox for a stuck message. Every now and then, an email gets stuck in the outbox causing a blockage. If the first email cannot go through, none of the newer messages created can go through either. The original email may be corrupt or simply too large for the ISP to handle. Delete the stuck email and the blockage will be cleared.

Email Error Messages

The above two steps are useful in solving numerous email send problems. However, the possibilities are vast. Is your email application generating an error message? If so, that message could provide us with additional clues. Let us know the email application that you are using along with any error messages and we can dig a little deeper for you.

Unverified Server Certificate

For months I have been trying to get rid of this error message. Everything you told me to do, did not take care of it. It’s a problem from Incredimail.  The message is: The sever you are connected to is using a security certificate that could not be a verified… (details) the certificate’s CN name does not match the pass value.Kat Delong

Digital certificates are used to authenticate clients and servers on the web to make sure that your web browsing is secure. Certificates are electronic credentials that connect the identity of the certificate owner to a pair of private and public keys that are used to encrypt that information digitally.

Add Trusted Publisher

You can try to add a trusted publisher when the security box from the site pops up with an error message as you use Internet Explorer to download active content from the website. When you see the Security Warning dialog box, select “Always trust content from the site.”

In Internet Explorer, select Tools and then choose Internet Options. Click on the Content tab and choose Certificates. Select Trusted Root Certification Authorities tab. Click on Advanced. See if Secure Email is checked. If you get a pop up error message about the secure certificate after that, choose Yes.

Uninstall Incredimail

Incredimail is one of those applications that users either love or hate. We’ve gotten a lot of mail about Incredimail problems over the years, and if you can do without it, you can try to delete it from your computer to see if that solves the authentication problems. Unfortunately, removing Incredimail from your computer isn’t as easy as it looks.

To uninstall the program, first try the standard Add/Remove Programs method. Go to Start and then choose Control Panel. Choose Add/Remove Programs. Find Incredimail from the drop down list and click on the Change/Remove button to take it off the system. Incredimail is known to leave unwanted objects behind in the computer’s registry, so you should try to remove them to avoid future problems. Microsoft has complete manual removal instructions on their website, but unless you really know what you’re doing, it can be dangerous to edit the registry. One wrong move in the registry can severely damage your system.

As an alternate, try a registry cleaner such as Reg Cure, or there are Incredimail uninstallers that you can purchase and download from several different websites.

E-mail Does Not Show Graphics

Graphics do not show in my email.Kat Delong

There are many reasons why emails that contain images show up either with a big red X where the image should be or a string of text instead of the picture. Usually, this has to do with the settings on your computer and the way the images are being sent in the email.

HTML in an email may not actually contain an image - it may contain a reference to an image that is downloaded separately. Microsoft Outlook 3 in particular, is known for causing problems with default settings for images. There are some fairly easy things you can do to try to fix the problem.

Check Settings

The easiest things to check are the settings in both Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. First, go to Internet Explorer. Open Tools and then Internet Options. Choose Advanced and find Multimedia. Make sure the item “Show Pictures” is checked.

Once you’ve done that, go to Outlook Express and click on Tools. Choose Options and then go to Security. Find “Virus Protection”. If the option “Do not allow attachments” is checked, clear it and then chose Apply.

Firewall

It’s possible that you have too much security in the form of firewalls on your computer. Windows comes with an installed firewall, but when it is coupled with third-party security that also has firewall protection, you can run into trouble. Try disabling the Windows firewall and see if that solves your image problem. To do this, go to Start and then Control Panel. Find Windows Firewall and click on the General tab. You can turn it off with one click. This is safe as long as you have another security system in place that has it’s own firewall.

Registry Fix

You can also try to fix the problem in the registry. Close Outlook and navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security\OutlookSecureTempFolder . You can then see the folder in this key - it will probably be something similar to this: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKxxxxx\. Delet all of the files you find in the folder and restart Outlook.

Delete Browsing History

Sometimes deleting your browsing history can help with images not showing in emails. Go to Tools and then Internet Options and delete the Browsing History. Go to Start and then Control Panel. Choose Internet Options and then General tab.  Under Browsing History, choose Delete.

Hopefully one of these options will get your images back in your emails - let us know if you need any more help.

Printing Partial Emails in Outlook

I use Microsoft Outlook 2003 for email and frequently receive email replies that are replies to replies etc and all the messages from start to finish are shown. How do I get to print only the most recent reply without including all the previous ones?Celeste Stewart

I had to borrow my husband’s laptop which has Microsoft Outlook 2003 installed on it to make sure that the steps for selective printing in Microsoft Outlook 2003 are the same as they are in other e-mail clients such as Windows Live Mail. Indeed they are! So, this solution should be fairly universal to other users who want to print only the most recent message for printing.

The Print Dialog Box

Whether you’re using Microsoft Outlook 2003, Outlook Express, or Windows Live Mail, the Print dialog box is nearly identical consisting of a General tab and an Options tab. Normally, you’d go to File > Print, use the Control + P key combination, or click on the printer icon in order to bring up the Print dialog box. From there, you’d click Print and your printer would print the current document, in this case an e-mail message. However, this isn’t a normal situation, so let’s slow down.

Selecting Text

First, open the e-mail that you will be printing. Scroll through the message until you find the most recent reply and use your mouse to highlight the text that you want to print. Once the text is highlighted, then use the File > Print command to open the Print dialog box. In the General tab, look for the Page Range area where you will find: All, Selection, Current Page, and Pages. Since you want to selectively print the highlighted text, choose Selection. Click the Print button and your e-mail will print the e-mail with only the text that you selected.

What about the Headers?

I was a little concerned about the header information and whether or not it would be printed. The header information contains the To, From, CC, BCC, Date, and Subject lines. In most cases, you would want this information to print along with your selected text. No worries, it did. By using the Selection option, you are able to selectively choose the text to print while also printing the header information which helps identify and timestamp the message.

Incredimail Update Failure

I cannot get into my Incredimail after I said yes to an update. Now I am getting the following message: “Critical error has occurred. Incredimail cannot continue this session.” I tried rebooting and using restore several times but no luck. Celeste Stewart

System Restore after Update Failures

Okay, so System Restore did not work, correct? Usually, if you have a valid System Restore point from before an update, you can roll back the computer to its previous settings by going to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. However, if you don’t have System Restore enabled or the restore points are from long before you installed Incredimail, then it won’t be of much help. Since System Restore didn’t do the trick, let’s see what else we can come up with.

Known Incredimail Update Issues

In the Incredimail Help Center, there’s a section titled Incredimail Upgrade - Known Issues. It lists two known issues with upgrades: a reboot loop issue and an installation script / fatal error. Links are provided for downloading the appropriate fixes. Unfortunately, this page is not dated, so it’s unclear whether these are old issues or current ones. In any case, the second issue’s solution should work for you as it provides a link to a “fixed version of the Incredimail upgrade.”

Reinstall Incredimail

Another option is to reinstall Incredimail from scratch. Incredimail claims that you do not need to first uninstall Incredimail. However, if the reinstall fails, you’d be smart to uninstall the original copy. If you uninstall the program first, you will likely need to reenter your information including your e-mail account settings as well as your contact list, so uninstall the program as a last resort.

If you are using the paid version of Incredimail and have lost your registration codes, Incredimail has a form that you can use to retrieve your product registration codes. You will need your original e-mail address that you used when you purchased the product in order for the retrieval form to work. Hopefully, that won’t be necessary.
