Fixing DLL Problems

A few days ago, my computer started generating the following error on boot-up: Error loading khedbc.dll. The specified module could not be found. How do I solve this?Celeste Stewart

KHEDBC.DLL Errors

There doesn’t appear to be much information about khedbc.dll and its function. However, that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. DLL files are system and program files known as Dynamic Library Link files. Think of DLL files like software building blocks. For example, common software functions like printing or uploading files to a server are used across multiple programs. Rather than creating these functions from scratch, developers often use DLLs. Windows computers are preloaded with hundreds of DLLs and many more are installed with other programs. Not only does this make it easier for developers to create programs, it makes the programs smaller because many of the components required are already on the users’ systems.

Problems arise when DLLs disappear or become damaged. This can happen in many ways including uninstalling other programs (and agreeing to remove “shared system files”), power surges, virus attacks, and accidental deletion.

Restoring DLL Files

There are several ways to restore DLL files. In your case, since this just happened a few days ago, the easiest option is to use System Restore (if enabled). System Restore takes periodic snapshots of your system files so that should something go awry, you can restore those files. What’s neat about this utility is it doesn’t affect your data. It simply rolls back your system to an earlier date when all of its system files were intact. Your data files remain safe and sound. You may need to reinstall any programs installed after the restore point as well as re-update your operating system and antivirus programs.

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore and choose a restore point from before the problem occurred. Follow the prompts and your problem should soon be solved.

System File Checker

Another option for restoring DLL files, is the System File Checker. Because many DLL files are considered system files, this tool is often effective at restoring them. Go to Start > Run and type in: sfc /scannow

This tool scans your system to make sure all of the system files are present and in good condition. If not, for example, if an expected DLL file is missing, the tool will replace the missing or damaged file with a clean copy. You may be prompted to insert your Windows installation disk so that the utility can copy the missing file back into place or your computer may have a hidden partition containing Windows setup files. Have your disk handy just in case.

Software and DLLs

If you recently installed or uninstalled software just before the DLL went missing, it’s possible that either the new installation overwrote the DLL or the uninstall removed it. If you know which program it was, try reversing the process (either uninstalling or reinstalling).

Hopefully System Restore will be available to you and solve this pesky missing DLL file.

CoreFoundation.dll is Missing

I’ve downloaded IE8 for the second time. It ran great for a while but now the problems are bad again. Now I am missing CoreFoundation.dll. Will uninstalling put it back? Is there a free fix somewhere? What can I do? Susan Keenan

Since we are unsure why this type of error is occurring, you have several options that you can try to resolve the problem.

What is the corefoundation.dll?

CoreFoundation.dll is associated with Apple software, and is typically used with software belonging to iTunes, MobileMe, or QuickTime.

Reinstall the Application Asking for the CoreFoundation.dll

Quite often, the quickest way to fix a missing DLL file is to reinstall the application that needs to use it. This means that you need to completely uninstall the application and reinstall it. If the application has its own uninstaller, it is best to use that program to uninstall the program properly. When you reinstall the program, it should automatically reinstall the corefoundation.dll file. If this strategy does not work, try another one.

How to obtain a missing CoreFoundation.dll?

It is possible to download the missing DLL from a free online DLL directory. Once you download the file, you need to copy it to your “Systems” folder. Typically, your “Systems” folder should look like: C:\Windows\System 32. Once you have it, you can follow these instructions to register the corefoundation.dll.

  • Select Start.
  • Select Run. (In Vista and Windows7, search for “run.”
  • Type “cmd” into the open box that appears.
  • Press enter.
  • Type “regsvr32 corefoundation.dll” into the Command Prompt window.
  • Press enter.
  • Type “exit” in the Command Prompt window.

Scan Computer for Spyware and Virus Infections

Problems with the corefoundation.dll are often discovered after the computer has been infected with malware of some type. All types of malware including a Trojan Horse, worms, virus, and rootkits can corrupt a DLL file, leading to prompts that you are missing the DLL. Use your anti-virus/anti-spyware application to check for problems. If you don’t already have one, you can use one of the free versions such as Ad Aware, AVG, SpyBot, or Hijack This. Microsoft also now offers free computer security tools.

Missing D3DX9.dll File

My program can’t start because d3dx9.dll is missing. What is d3dx9.dll?Kate Dubensky

What are DLL Files?

DLL files - also known as Dynamic Link Library files - are a format introduced by Microsoft to allow various applications to access commonly used information from shared files, referred to as shared library files. These files act as containers for data and processes that are frequently used by a number of different programs and applications so that each individual program and application doesn’t have to contain the data separately. This acts as a space saving feature, reducing repetitive data and saving computer space to run processes more efficiently. DLL files are structurally the same as Windows EXE - or executable files, meaning that they are self-initiating and launch when called upon by the program, not requiring manual initiation.

What is the D3DX9.DLL File?

In your case, the d3dx9.dll file is related to DirectX components that you have installed on your computer. DirectX is another Microsoft solution that stores collections of APIs - application programming interfaces - used on various multimedia programs: games and video. DirectX and similar formats are also the foundation for the Microsoft gaming console Xbox.

About DirectX DLL Files

DirectX stores runtime libraries. Your error message means that some of these library files are missing for your multimedia files - most commonly different games. For some reason the DLL files are not always loaded with the game, assumedly because users will already have the libraries installed.

Download the Latest DirectX Version from Microsoft

Thankfully, the solution is simple. You can visit the Microsoft website and download the latest version of DirectX, or the latest updates and get your computer up to speed. This way the DLL files will be stored on your system and available to all the games and applications you run that require them. Alternatively, you can install DirectX directly to the game disk if you only want it to be available for the single application. Here is the link to the Microsoft DirectX 11 webpage.

Hope this helps!!

VUMEFESA.DLL Error

The error C:windowssystem32vumefesa.dll. has been coming up for some time when XP is loaded.Kat Delong

DLL errors are common for Windows operating systems and may be caused by corrupted programs, bad hardware or malware. DLL files (dynamic link library files) are a collection of files that allow executable programs to communicate with a device or contain code that allow the system to perform particular functions.  They are basically helper programs for the other programs that you are running on your computer.

VUMEFESA.DLL

This particular DLL error is most likely malware that was added into the registry as an auto-start so that it will load on boot up. It looks like it was attached to part of the registry that holds information for shortcuts and when it is infected by adware such as this, it can rewrite your shortcuts which is probably why it is coming up when XP is loaded. The registry stores Windows operating system setting and options including those for the hardware, operating system software and user settings.

Cleaning the Registry

Because this is malware, the best course of action is to scan for viruses and adware, clean the registry and then do another scan to be sure the system is clean. You want to make sure you don’t cross contaminate and reinfect your system, which is why we recommend two cleanings.

If you are not currently using a good antivirus program (and you should be), you can check on our site for some reviews and options. If you do have one on your system, make sure you have any updates installed and then do a complete scan. Once that is done, a registry cleaner such as RegCure can clean out your registry errors. After that, do another virus scan just to make sure that nothing got duplicated and dumped back on your system.

Once you’ve followed those steps, the DLL error should disappear. There are ways to get into the registry and do it manually, but I don’t recommend it, unless you are a tech pro, as changing the registry incorrectly can wreak havoc on your system.

Troubleshooting OLEAUT32.DLL Error

I’m running XP PRO and I cannot boot at all. I just get “application failed because file oleaut32.dll missing.” I have tried Safe Mode and Last Known Good Configuration but nothing works at all. What can I do when I can’t even boot Windows?Kate Dubensky

Booting Past a Startup Error

If you aren’t having any luck booting into Safe Mode, then booting from your Windows operating system disk is likely your only option. You will, however, need to have a Windows boot disk for almost anything at this point. Before we go on, some users with this problem report being able to boot into Safe Mode with a command prompt after several tries, so if a boot disk isn’t readily available, you could try booting a few times to see if you can get on that way.

Use Recovery Console from Boot Disk

In any case, you need to get some control over your system and, if normal and safe boot procedures aren’t working, there are boot disk options. First, you can use the Recovery Console to run some hard disk repair scans, which will hopefully take care of the problem.

  1. Put the Windows CD in the drive and turn your computer off
  2. Give it a minute, then boot back up - the computer should boot from the disk
  3. At the Welcome to Set Up screen, press R for Recovery Console
  4. Use the arrow keys to choose you installation, then Enter
  5. If you are asked for an Administrator password, leave the field blank and press Enter
  6. Now, at the command prompt, type in chkdsk /r - there is a space between the k and the /r.
  7. The chkdsk application will launch and check your hard disk. It takes some time so be patient and let it run - it can take more than an hour and a half and go through periods where it appears stalled. Don’t interfere, let it run .
  8. When the scan is complete you will be returned to the command prompt - type exit then press Enter
  9. If your computer doesn’t restart automatically, shut it down and restart manually
  10. I hope this boots normally to Windows

Repair your Windows Installation

If not, you can try to repair your operating system installation in a similar procedure.

  1. Put the CD in the drive and reboot the computer - it will start from disk
  2. At Welcome Screen press Enter to Set Up Windows
  3. Accept the license
  4. Choose the operating system using the arrow keys on your keyboard, then press R to launch the repair. This will keep all your files and folders in place and only reinstall the Windows programs that might be corrupted
  5. Let it run, don’t press any key to boot from CD even if you are offered
  6. Once its finished, reboot and I hope you are back up and running
  7. Now, it is VERY important that you reapply all your Windows and security patches, updates and applications

I hope this does it! If not, write us again and tell us the operating system you are using and as many details as you can about the problem and what you’ve tried. Good luck!

Missing FermataU.dll File

When I load a disk with photographs on it, my computer tells me it is unable to locate FermataU.dll. Unable to fix problem. Bought a number of software programs but still not showing pictures on my computer. Susan Keenan

What is the FermataU.dll File?

The FermataU.dll file seems to be associated with a few imaging applications including HP printers, Walmart photo applications, and other photography programs. Problems with this particular file seem to occur when photos are being transferred from one media source to another. It sounds as though you might be using Image Zone Express, photo software put out by Hewlett-Packard. This software includes the FermataU.dll file.

Unfortunately, the possibility that the FermataU.dll file on your computer is a form of malware does exist. Therefore, you need to run a scan for malware before continuing on with any of the suggestions here. Before you run your anti-spyware/anti-virus application, make sure that you update it first so that it includes all of the current listings. If you do not have an anti-spyware/anti-virus application, then I can recommend that you try Anti-Virus PLUS.

Replacing Missing FermataU.dll File

The best way to fix the case of a missing FermataU.dll file is to uninstall and reinstall the software that is attempting to use the file. Therefore, you need to identify the application that you are trying to use to view the photos. Once you have done that, then you need to locate the software for the program so that you can reinstall it. If you don’t have the software disk handy, then you can check on the manufacturer’s website to see if a download of the software is available.

If you aren’t sure which application you are using that is missing the file, check to see what program you are using when you try to transfer the photos from your disk to your computer. Alternatively, you can also look in your list of programs and see if HP’s Image Zone Express is listed. If it is, I would suggest finding your disk for it and reinstalling the software. If you can’t find the disk, then uninstall your version of Image Zone Express and visit this link to download a free version of the newest application: HP’s Image Zone Express.

Repairing Missing FermataU.dll File: Registry Cleaner

You can also try using a registry cleaner to repair missing and broken files on the computer. Sometimes, files go missing due to improper shutdowns, computer crashes, viruses, and more. Using a registry cleaner puts all of these files back together in the right place too. I can recommend the following program for you to try: RegCure.
