Elizabeth Ann WestAnyone who has read my earlier answers will know I am no fan of Service Pack 3 after it wouldn’t work with my HP desktop’s AMD processor. But that’s another story. Basically, Microsoft’s goal with Service Packs is to fix the bug and issues of the greatest number of people, while knowing not every hardware setup will work. In your case, it looks like your Realtek ‘97 sound card was a hardware victim of Service Pack 3.

First choice, remove Service Pack 3

Your first option is to remove Service Pack 3 entirely from your system. This was the fix I had to do to save my HP. Unless you have an absolute need for Service Pack 3, as in it fixes a bug you regularly encounter without it, I would suggest this as the path of least resistance. To uninstall any Service Pack, simply make a trip to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, and scroll down to the bottom.

There are a few caveats to this solution. First, you will have to turn off your Automatic Updates, or your computer will just reinstall Service Pack 3 the next time you leave it alone. Second, you need to have a strong protection against Internet threats through a reputable malware and virus software title. The Tech Jocks recommendations are found at http://filetonic.com/scanner/. You will need: number 1 Anti-Virus Plus and number 8 XoftSpySE especially as Service Packs remove security vulnerabilities in Microsoft Software as well.

Second choice - enable the chipset on your motherboard

Use the Search and Find files option to look for a file named “inf” in the C:/Windows directory. This is a hidden folder, so make sure your file viewing settings allow you to see hidden files. Inside this file is another titled “hdaudbus.” Right-click on it and select the Install command. You may see a message or nothing at all, but that is okay.

Other users of Realtek sound cards have found success once they enable the high definition audio bus, which is what you just did. Now, try installing the Realtek ‘97 drivers from the CD, following all of the instructions including the re-boot.

If this also does not work, you can contact the motherboard manufacturer website and see if they have any new drivers for your BIOS. You can find out from http://support.asus.com/. In response to Service Pack 3, which has been out for quite a few months now, there is likely a BIOS update to make sure everything works well with Service Pack 3. Either way, it’s never a bad idea to update your BIOS, and few users realize this is even an option.

Worst case scenario, you can always remove Service Pack 3 and have your sound back. Perhaps in a few more months Microsoft will include support for your sound card with the Service Pack download. Unfortunately, the company does have a tendency to be funny about the brands of hardware it will support, and which ones it will not. Once your hardware moves to the “Not Supported List” life in Windows can become difficult.

Try the Manufacturer Website First

Kat DelongThe best place to look for drivers for any type of device is to go directly to the website for that computer or device. If you go to the Acer website then go to Service and Support. There is a link to the Driver Download section of the website. Click on this, choose your computer under “Select Product” and it will bring up a list of driver downloads that are available.

Upgrade Patch may be available

There is a CD-DVD upgrade patch for Windows Vista, which many people need. Be careful to download the correct driver for your operating system as drivers are OS-dependent. Choose the wrong one and it won’t work.

If your Speakers Dont Work

Many times, after you have updated to Windows Vista Service Pack 1, there will be a problem with some of your high-end audio devices. People have found that their speakers no longer work after running this update. While it will usually work with analog devices, those that use hi-fi digital speakers will need some help. You can go to your manufacturers website like we’ve done here to download the needed driver updates or you can go to Microsoft directly at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=En .

Automatic Driver Updating is Simple

If you have better things to do than worry about updating your drivers on a regular basis, you can purchase a program like Driver Genius to do this work for you. These programs have access to huge driver databases and are very easy for users to understand. When you first download the program, you will have to give it some basic information about your computer and then it will do the rest for you.

Driver Genius is particularly good at checking for compatibility with Windows Vista. Free downloads are available but limited to scanning only. If you have a few extra dollars hanging around, it just might be worth parting with about 30 of them to get the full program and be able to cross one more thing off of your to-do list.

Susan Keenan If your Windows operating system will not recognize the USB RJ45 network card, it cannot install the USB driver for it. Quite often, USB devices come with an installation CD that includes the necessary USB driver for it. If you haven’t already checked your installation CD for the USB RJ45 network card, you should do so now. I believe this particular USB device does have a driver included on the CD that needs to be installed.

If you purchased your USB RJ45 network card secondhand and you do not have the installation CD, you can obtain the driver by visiting the manufacturer’s website. When downloading drivers, a few precautions should be taken.

First and foremost, you need to ensure that you are downloading the proper driver. Drivers are specific to the manufacturer of a device as well as to the operating system that is being used on the computer. Check the documentation that you have for the device as it should contain both the manufacturer and a website that you can visit for support.

For example, let’s say that you purchased a Kinamax USB RJ45 network card. You would need to visit the Kinamax website as follows. To download the driver, visit the Kinamax website at this link: USB RJ45 ethernet card driver. It will take you directly to the page where you can access the driver that you need in order for the device to work. Please check to make sure that you are downloading the driver for the operating system that you are utilizing. Typically, it is best to close all other programs when downloading any software to avoid any problems. Once you install the driver, you might want to reboot your computer before continuing working on it.

If Kinamax isn’t the manufacturer of your USB RJ45 network card, look over the documentation that came with the device. If you don’t have any documentation, check your receipt for the name. If you don’t have the receipt, check the device itself for identifying marks. If none of that is possible, Google the device for pictures of it until you find one that matches your device and you should be able to identify it that way.

How do I install a LEXMARK X3350 printer without a CD?

Kate Dubensky First, check the manufacturer’s website, in this case Lexmark, and see if the installation program is available to download. If you can’t get the program online, you might be able to ask if the company can send you an installation CD.

In order to operate your external devices like printers, scanners, and keyboards, your computer needs to know what language they speak and how to communicate with them. This information is held in programs called drivers, which are little bits of code that contain instructions for the computer to run and control the external device that you connect. These drivers are sometimes included in the hard drive of the computer like in the case of the keyboard and mouse, the computer needs this information installed to give the user control. Other, secondary devices like scanners and printers are not automatically recognized by the computer and the information and drivers on the installation CD and driver updates are required.

On the Lexmark website there is a tab labeled Drivers & Downloads. Open this menu and you will see a list of different drivers for different computers and operating systems. Choose the right option that corresponds with your system and download it. You can try connecting the printer and see if the driver you installed is sufficient to install the printer, but it might be an update and not a complete program and you would still need to get the installation program. New drivers are published to correspond with new developments in hardware and operating systems. Even if you find the driver update for the computer system you have, you might still need the original installation instructions from the install software.

Susan KeenanWhenever installing a USB device for the first time, the USB driver that goes along with it must also be installed. Typically, our Windows operating system takes care of this automatically for us. We don’t even need to think about it. It is kind of like when we were kids and our moms did our laundry for us and we didn’t even need to ask. It just showed up in our closets and bureau drawers fresh and pressed. Usually, this is what happens with our USB drivers- they just show up on our computers without us even needing to do anything.

No wonder we are thrown into a quandary when Windows suddenly can’t find the driver for our USB device. When Windows can’t find a driver, what does that mean? Why can’t Windows find one? Doesn’t the driver exist? Of course the driver exists; it just might not be accessible to Windows.

When a USB device is plugged into the computer, Windows automatically identifies it. Then, Windows attempts to install the driver for the device. In some cases, the driver is one that Windows already has accessible to it. In other cases, if the driver is not an existing one, Windows can download it automatically from the Windows Update. If Windows has been able to download the driver for the USB device, you will see some type of notification that your USB device is ready for use.

If Windows for some reason cannot identify the device, then it cannot locate and install a driver for it. When this happens, the first thing you should do is to check to see if a disc containing the missing driver has been included in the USB packaging. In fact, Windows will probably suggest that you do so. Once you insert the disc, you will be able to install the USB driver.

In extreme cases, not only can’t Windows find the USB driver, but also, a disc containing the USB driver has not been included with the device. When this happens, you need to visit the website of the manufacturer of the device in order to download the missing driver. Typically, this type of information can be located within the support section of the website.

To locate the proper website for the manufacturer, check the packaging of the device to see if it is listed. In many cases, it will be. Alternatively, you can check the following for a list of the major hardware vendors and their contact information: Hardware Vendor Contact Information, which is available courtesy of Microsoft.

It is vital that you check to make sure that you download the driver that is compatible with the version of Windows that exists on your computer. If you accidentally download a driver that you cannot use, simply uninstall it from your computer.

Why isn’t my USB device working?

Susan KeenanThere isn’t any real configuring going on with USB devices since they are actually Plug and Play devices. This means that human error related to malfunctioning USB devices is limited to physical acts such as plugging the device in improperly or failing to install the proper driver when necessary. Therefore, checking the obvious stuff such as power cords and ports is probably one of the first steps to take when troubleshooting problems.

Since several different reasons could also be responsible for a USB device that isn’t working, I’ll go through them here. The most frequent problems with USB devices that aren’t related to the device itself are related to driver problems.

Windows typically installs the drivers for most USB devices. Sometimes the device won’t work if Windows doesn’t recognize it. If this happens, Windows cannot install the proper driver for the device and you should receive a prompt that you need to install the driver that came with your device. Once you do so, the device should work.

Sometimes Windows will recognize the USB device, but it cannot install the driver because it has been included with the USB device. If this happens, the device is not going to work until you retrieve the disc with the driver from the USB device’s packaging. This is one of the most important reasons for reading the literature that comes with the device.

Additionally, some USB devices must be turned on in order for them to work. One example of this is a printer. In some cases, the printer will turn on automatically once a print job has been sent to it. This information can also be discovered by reading the literature tha comes with the device.

With older computers, older versions of USB 1.1 have been installed on the machine. If this is the case and you are trying to install a USB 2.0 device, Windows will not be able to install the appropriate driver and the device won’t work. One example of this is the group of USB devices known as iPods. They only work with USB 2.0.

Additionally, as technology changes, drivers become old and need updating. This can be checked by visiting the website of the manufacturer of the device.

A faulty driver can also account for a USB device that refuses to work. Reinstalling the driver is usually the best route to go when this happens. This might occur when installing an updated driver. If so, go back to the original driver that you had prior to the update.

A more difficult problem to fix with nonworking USB devices occurs when the device itself is the problem. A faulty device usually requires a trip back to the manufacturer for necessary repairs. One of the ways that you can check this is to plug the USB device into another computer if one is available to see if it works on that one. Plus, you can check the status of the USB device by taking the following path:

Start→ Control Panel→ System and Maintenance→ Device Manager→ Double click the category for the device→ right click the specific device that you are checking→ Click Properties→ Click General→ Look for mention of any problems in the status box for the device. If the device is faulty, contact the manufacturer for instructions on returning, repairing, or exchanging the device.
