This is quite a catch-22 as updating device drivers typically requires a connection to the Internet in order to find and download the appropriate driver for your hardware. Unfortunately, when it comes to the modem not working, connecting to the Internet isn’t necessarily an option.

Options for Downloading Drivers from Remote Computers

While your computer won’t connect to the Internet and you must use someone else’s computer in your quest for help, you do have options. Do you have a USB stick? These are quite handy in these situations as most computers have USB ports. For example, once you locate the correct driver, simply download it to the USB stick rather than your friend’s computer’s hard drive. From there, take the USB stick to your own computer and install the Micro Star drivers on your PC.

Where to Find Micro Star Drivers

Micro Star’s Web site is the obvious first choice. Micro Star (or MCI) now has a Live Update Online feature that makes updating MCI drivers fairly easy - if the modem works and you can connect that is. The Web site also has a manual search. I tried searching for your MS 6946 modem and came up empty. That’s not to say that Micro Star can’t help you, it just means that you may have to contact their tech support directly for discontinued device drivers or device drivers not listed on the Web site. In the U.S., you can call MCI at 626-913-0828 or visit http://www.mcicomputer.com/. Contact information for other countries is available on this Web page.

Try your Computer Manufacturer

When the manufacturer of a device doesn’t have drivers listed, your next best step is to contact the computer manufacturer. For example, if you have a Gateway computer, go to the Download section of Gateway’s Web site and search for your exact model of computer. Likewise, if you have a Dell, go to Dell’s Web site. If you have a Sony, head on over to Sony’s Web site, and so on. Most manufacturers bundle device driver updates per model and make them available for download. Again, you’ll need to use a friend’s computer and download any updates found to your USB stick, floppy disc, or a recordable CD.

NVIDIA Drivers: Where to Get and How to Install

You’ve recently had to reformat your hard drive, install your operating system, and you’ve lost the installation disk for your NVIDIA video card. Or, you just want to upgrade to the latest drivers for your card. Doing either of these can be easier than you think, and can be done in a matter of minutes.

Which NVIDIA Video Card

If the device is not already installed, it will be necessary to remember the NVIDIA type of video card you have. Was it a GeForce, GeForce M/Go, Quadro, nForce, Tesla, or a Legacy? If none of these sound familiar to you, you may want to go digging through all your old paperwork for the manual, or even the invoice.

Go to the NVIDIA website, click ‘Download Drivers’ right under the company logo. On the drivers download page you will have two options. The first is to manually search for the drivers you need. With this choice you will need to know the product type, product series, your operating system, and choose the language.

The NVIDIA Website

Choose your options, and then click the search button. When the next page appears, look for your driver. For example: You have a GeForce 5 FX series video card. Click search, and on the next you’ll see the driver details, size of download, and the version number. Below that, under the Release Highlights tab, you’ll notice that the driver also supports the GeForce 6, 7, 8, and 9 series GPUs (Graphics Processing Unit).

Read the NVIDIA Software License Agreement, check the box which states that you agree, and click the Download Now button. Depending on your internet connection speed, this could take a while.

With Windows XP or Vista you may see a drop down security box. Right click it, and then click on Download file. You’ll then get a pop up box which asks you whether you want to Run the file from its current location, Save it to your hard drive, or Cancel. (On older Windows operating systems the options are the same except there won’t be a security warning.)

If you have a fast connection, choose the Run option. This will install the drivers on your computer directly from the NVIVIA website. Please note: If you’re using Windows Vista, you will also have to have administrator privileges, and click to continue.

Saving it to your hard drive will save you time later if you make a drivers CD for your computer. Doing this will require you to double-click the installation exe file, and then you will need to follow directions from there on.

Alternatively you can Find and Update NVIDIA Drivers Automatically

The second option, new to the NVIDIA website and still in prerelease, is to automatically find the drivers. This option may not work for you until the official release. NVIDIA makes a wide variety of graphics cards and motherboards, so you will have to choose whether to download the graphics drivers (In the case of a video card), and the motherboard drivers (If you have a motherboard with an NVIDIA chipset).

In the event you can’t find information about your NVIDIA graphics card because it came as part of a major retailer’s system (Dell or eMachines for example), click the support button at the top-right of the screen. Look to the left of the screen, and click Hardware Support. You will be presented with two options there. Click the More Info button under the one which states that your NVIDIA graphics card or motherboard came as part of a computer purchase. Click the type of computer you have, and then follow the directions from there.

After installing your new drivers, rebooting your computer, and setting up the options you want, go and have fun on your computer.

And the Easiest way to Update your Drivers is …

You guessed it - Why bother with trying to update one driver at a time, and run the risk of doing serious harm to your PC?

Keeping your drivers up-to-date and your computer problem-free is as easy as downloading one simple tool - Driver Genius.

This software will match the correct drivers to your system every time!

Resolving such errors is often a simple matter of updating both the printer drivers and the operating system for the computer. For additional tips, continue reading.

Use the Device Manager

You can access the Device Manager in order to determine whether or not an issue exists with the printer.

If the printer has a problem, you will see a black exclamation point in a yellow background. A problem code should also be displayed to explain the problem for you.

If a red “X” is present, then the printer has been disabled. This indicates that the diver has not been loaded properly. If the red “X” is present, install the correct driver.

The presence of a blue “i” with a white background simply indicates that the printer was manually selected. This does not suggest a problem.

If a “green” question mark is visible next to the printer identification, then the driver has been installed. This will only show up on computers with Windows Me and it simply means that some functionality might not be present.

How to Access the Device Manager

Click Start.

Click Control Panel.

Click Performance and Maintenance.

Click System.

Click Hardware.

Click Device Manager.

Re-installing the Printer

In some cases, a printer might not have installed correctly on the computer. This can happen when insufficient memory resources are available. One of the best troubleshooting scenarios is to uninstall the printer using the add/remove hardware utility and then reinstall the printer. The Windows operating system includes drivers for most printers and installs it automatically when you connect your printer to the computer and turn it on. Close all other programs whenever troubleshooting a device or installing it. Not only will this save on resources, but also, it will help to identify the problem.

Updating Printer Drivers

One of the first steps to take is to check on the printer driver. Make sure that you have the latest one. Updating the printer driver is a simple matter of going to the Canon website to check. Canon Driver.

Clearing Memory

In some cases, computers without enough memory will have difficulty printing and will generate an error message. If this could possibly be the issue here, take the time to clear some memory by

clearing the temporary cache

deleting old files

deleting old folders

deleting old emails

removing unwanted programs or applications

emptying the recycle bin.

Other Possibilities

Microsoft reports that this is an issue with some operating systems such as NT and 2000. In these cases, the permissions in the “spool” folder are not set to read “everyone.” Read more about it in this Knowledgebase Article.

Outside Tech Support

If you have trouble in the future with any of your hardware components, you can always visit Driver Genius to look for the latest version of a driver.

Each time I try I am led back to the same safecart site where I am asked to register and pay again, what am I missing?

Driver Genius is a program that allows you to quickly find and update the device drivers for the various hardware and peripheral devices on your computer. Among its many features are tools for backing up and restoring device drivers, device diagnostics tools, updating drivers functions, removing obsolete drivers for performance, and more.

Purchasing Driver Genius

Many users find that manually updating their device drivers is time consuming and difficult. For about $30 or so, products like this make updating device drivers fairly painless. However, in your case, it appears that the software doesn’t know that you have paid the licensing fee. What typically happens is that a user pays for the product and within about fifteen minutes or so, an e-mail arrives containing the license code. You must enter this license code into the Driver Genius software in order to get the software to stop nagging you for payment.

Entering the License Code

Since the license code arrives by e-mail, check your inbox for a message containing this information. If it is not in your inbox, double check your spam or junk mail folder as it’s common for these messages to be filtered as spam. If you did not receive the e-mail or have since lost it, you can contact sales@driver-soft.com directly for a replacement license code. You’ll need your order ID. However, if you don’t have the order ID either, you will need to provide them with the name of the site where you initially purchased the product, the e-mail address you used to register, and other details.

Once you have the license code, open Driver Genius and click on the Help menu. Choose Enter Code and then copy and paste the code into the box. The code is case sensitive, so copying and pasting is your best bet to avoid any entry errors.

Finding the license code and entering it into the software should solve the problem. By entering the code, you are telling the software that you have purchased the license. Once it understands this, it should stop prompting you to do so.

Your computer needs instructions and communication devices to allow it to use external devices and to perform certain graphic functions like video display.

Video cards, also called video adapters or graphics cards or adapters fit into a slot on the computer’s motherboard and communicate between the computer and certain graphic programs or processes.

New software programs and new hardware devices can both result in incompatibilities on your computer system and might require you to upgrade your video card. Device drivers are small computer programs that your computer uses to communicate with different components of your computer system and different software programs.

Locate your Video Card

To update your video card, you first need to find out some information about your particular card.

Click on your My Computer icon and select Properties

Choose the tab marked Device Manager and locate Display Adapters

Click on the + sign beside this category and you will see the name of your card/driver

In order to download updates you will need to know this, so make a note of it now.

Download a Driver

The next thing to do is download a new driver. There are several websites and programs that you can use to find new drivers like DriverGenius or DriverAgent, but you can also find them yourself this way:

Using the name you found in the previous step, open the website of the manufacturer

On the site find the name of the right driver and choose that link

There will now be instructions on how to download the driver, follow them completely

Make sure you save the file to the desktop so you can find it easily later

Install a Driver

Now all you have to do is install the driver

Follow the same steps you did in the first phase to open the Device Manager and this time select to Remove the driver

Now, on your desktop, find and click twice on the driver file that you saved in the last step

An install wizard will open and guide you through the next steps, make sure you complete all the instructions

Last of all, restart your computer to allow all the changes to take effect and to update the new settings and you should be all set

The problem with manually cleaning up a computer is that sometimes we delete files our computer actually needs. You have a few choices to restore your sound file.

The Recycle Bin

If you recently went a little crazy deleting files, you may be able to find them in the Recycle Bin where, if found, you can restore them. Since you’re not sure exactly what file is missing, this could be an exercise in futility. However, if you know the approximate date when you deleted files, you can change the view and sort the deleted file by date. For example, if you deleted a bunch of files on October 10th, go into Recycle Bin, click of View, and choose Details. Now, click on the Date field. This will rearrange the deleted files by date.

Look for clues such as File Type and File Location. If you find a file that appears to be a system file such as a DLL file that was deleted on the date when you deleted files and your sound stopped working, restore it right-clicking it and choosing Restore.

System Restore

System Restore is useful utility for restoring system settings to a previous state and may work in this case providing that you have a restore point from before the deletion. Go to Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System Restore and select a restore point (if any) from before the deletion. This option does not cause data loss nor does it affect your program files. It only restores system settings such as device drivers and other system settings.

Data Recovery Software

Data recovery software is useful for recovering deleted files - even those that were accidentally deleted and emptied from the Recycle Bin. Like using the Recycle Bin, you’ll need to do a bit of detective work to determine which file to undelete.

Finding and Installing New Sound Drivers

Another option is to reinstall your sound card’s device drivers. If you have the original CD, you can use that. However, if you’re going to go through the hassle of doing this, you might as well use the most current sound drivers available. Go to your sound card manufacturer’s Web site and download the most current device drivers for your sound card. Use the Device Manager, which is found in the Control Panel, to update the drivers. Click on Sound, Video, and Game Controllers, find your sound device in the list and double click it. Go to the Driver tab and click Update. Browse your computer for the download and follow the prompts.

Hopefully, one of these tips will help you to find that lost sound file. If you need further support, take a look at the various remote tech support services featured at www.Filetonic.com/support.

The name itself, Unimodem Half-Duplex device, can be a bit confusing. In actuality, it refers to a driver and not an actual hardware device.

What is the Unimodem Half-Duplex device?

The Unimodem Half-Duplex device also referred to as the Unimodem Half-Duplex audio device is the driver for the sound hardware found in many computers. It is necessary to enable sounds.

What is an Audio Driver?

The audio driver enables your audio device to function properly in supporting audio playback.

Downloading the Unimodem Half-Duplex device with the Installation CD

In general, the driver for the Unimodem Half-Duplex device should be included on the CD that came with the motherboard/ computer. If you obtained the sound card from a secondary source, then the driver should be available with its CD.

Downloading the Unimodem Half-Duplex device through the Motherboard Manufacturer

If you locate the manufacturer of the motherboard, you can visit the web site and download the driver for the Unimodem Half-Duplex device from there. Make sure that you also have the version of your operating system handy as well.

Downloading the Unimodem Half-Duplex device with the Hardware Update Wizard

The Hardware Update Wizard is an excellent tool offered by Microsoft for locating the drivers your computer needs for its hardware. This Wizard assists with locating, installing, and configuring the correct driver for the hardware devices that exist on your computer. Make sure that your Wizard is enabled to search for drivers automatically. To do so, follow this path: Start→ Control Panel→ Double click on System→ Hardware→ Windows Update or Automatic Updates→ Click Automatically.

Downloading the Unimodem Half-Duplex device from other Websites

If you opt to download the Unimodem Half-Duplex device from another website, you can do so simply by conducting a Google search and selecting the website that you want to use. Some of these sites do not scan the file for viruses prior to the download and, in most cases, they state this on their website.

Protect Your Computer

Whenever downloading software from the Internet, you place your computer at risk of infection from spyware and viruses. Therefore, it is important that you have a reliable anti-virus application installed on your computer. Likewise, it is essential that you run this application on a regular basis, especially after downloading an application. .If you choose to download your driver from the Internet, then I suggest you also run an up-to-date anti-virus application such as ParetoLogic Anti-Virus Plus.

If you have previously purchased a download but you need to reinstall the program, go to your order information page and find the “re-download” button. This should take care of it for you.

HP Computers and Acer Drivers

Many HP users have reported problems with using their installed webcam on various models. The best solution has been to download a particular driver from Acer that is for the Chicony webcam that is installed on most machines. You can find this driver download here: http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SCANNER-Digital-CAMERA-WEBCAM/OTHER-SCANNERS/Acer-Extensa-5210-Chicony-Webcam-Driver-57.shtml .

Once you have found the drivers, follow these instructions:

Download the file and unzip it to a desktop folder.

Run the ‘setup.exe file’ in the folder that was unzipped.

Let the installer run and restart the computer. It will install the webcam drivers.

Open the Control Panel then go to Device Manager.

Find the webcam in ‘imaging devices.’ Even though you’ve installed Acer drivers it may still be listed as ‘HP Pavillion Webcam.’

Right click on the webcam and choose ‘Update Driver Software.’

Choose ‘Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.’

Uncheck the ‘Show Compatible Hardware’ box.

Scroll down and choose the Acer webcam.

The system may ask you a question about the installation - tell it to install it anyway.

After the installation, the webcam should be listed as Acer in the Device Manager.

If you have a Ricoh webcam installed rather than a Chicony, others have had success following these steps after downloading the Windows XP webcam driver.

If you are getting an error message when you try to use the webcam or these solutions don’t work for you, please let us know.

Fortunately, lots of help is available when dealing with sound drivers. This assistance ranges from finding out what sound drivers you need to locating the driver downloads to troubleshooting faulty sound drivers.

Finding Out What Sound Drivers You Need

To find out exactly what sound driver you need, you need to locate the sound card on your computer. To do so complete the following path:

Start→ Control Panel→ Sound, Speech, and Audio Devices→ Sound and Audio Devices.

The dialog box for Sound and Audio Devices opens. Click on “Hardware” in the upper right hand corner. As you look through this last section, you should be able to see which sound driver you need for your sound card. Make sure you take note of the manufacturer for it.

Locating the Driver Downloads

Visit the website for the manufacturer of the sound driver. After a brief look at the site, you should be able to locate their area for downloading drivers. Read the directions for installing your sound driver. Some drivers are automatically installed onto your computer once you select to download them; others require following installation prompts. If you are replacing a faulty driver, I suggest uninstalling that one before installing this one.

Troubleshooting Faulty Sound Drivers

Fortunately, a number of troubleshooting options are located within the “Sound, Speech and Audio Devices” section. Instead of clicking “Sound and Audio Devices,” click on the “? sound” at the left hand side of the area underneath the title “Troubleshooters.” This pops up a new dialog box with several options. Click in front of the selection that describes the problem that you are having. Click “Next” to see a list of options for either solving the sound problem or investigating it further. I suggest reading through all of the options before making your selection so that you get the closest scenario and the greatest likelihood of solving the problem.

Common Troubleshooting Strategies for Faulty Sound Drivers

A number of simple strategies often solve most sound problems. Look through this list and use any that might apply to your situation.

Check the power cables.

Check the volume control.

Check to see if a CD or DVD that won’t generate sound on your computer will generate it on another.

Read the sound device documentation that you have or check the manufacturer’s website for information. If the mute button has been checked for any hardware device, it might disable the sound for other hardware.

How to Check Your Volume Setting

Open “Volume Control.” Adjust the setting if “mute” or a low volume setting has been selected. To do so complete the following path: Start→ All Programs→ Accessories→ Entertainment→ Volume Control.

Download Driver Genius 8! This software is updated every day and has 1 Million+ drivers in its database

Driver detective is usually a good solution for keeping your drivers up to date, but as you’ve found sometimes it doesn’t work perfectly. I think you will have to download your sound card driver separately and then your audio problems should be fixed.

Driver Detective

In brief, Driver Detective is a download that you can use to streamline management of the drivers in your computer. It will find the manufacturers specific drivers for your computer. It uses Microsoft NET technology so that your system stays secure. It requires that you are running either Windows Visa, XP Pro, 2003 server or 2000 32 or 64 bits. You need a 300mhz or higher processor, 256 mb of ram and 22mb of disk space.

Find Sound Card

In order to download the right driver, you need to know what kind of soundcard is installed on your computer. Follow these directions to locate your sound card:

Go to My Computer.

Click on Properties, then click on the Hardware tab.

Click on Device Manager to expand it. You should be able to tell what type of sound card you have.

Download Driver Update

Once you’ve found the manufacturer for your driver, go to that website. Most sites will have easily accessible download buttons for their drivers. On most websites, you can just push the button and let the system do the rest. If you are updating an existing driver, you may need to uninstall the driver that is on your machine in order to download a new one. If that’s the case, follow the above steps, but right click on the driver and select Uninstall.

High Definition Devices

Computers that are running high-definition devices for their sound systems can use this driver to optimize the performance.

Reinstalling your driver manually should solve your sound card problem. Let us know if you need more information.
