In fact, the reason behind this is partly due to the way files are not only created but also in the way that they are deleted. When I create a file on my computer, the operating system has a special location where it keeps a pointer for the file. This location is referred to as the “File Allocation Table” or “FAT.” Its primary purpose is so that the operating system is able to tell where the beginning of the file is being stored.

So, I create a file that is stored somewhere on the hard drive while at the same time creating a pointer for my file that is stored in the File Allocation Table. If I decide to delete the file, what I am actually deleting is the pointer for that specific file. The file itself remains in the hard drive right where it was until I save another file, video, picture, or database and it becomes stored on that spot where the deleted file is located.

Until that happens, the file is still there, but it just isn’t visible to the operating system on my computer. In fact, until it is overwritten with a new file, everything about the file remains on the hard drive. This includes the date that the file was created, the size of the file, along with anything else relating to the file. It is also possible that deleted files or at least portions of them will remain in the RAM or random access memory of your computer.
