How many options do I have for this and how do I set it up?

As many of us have discovered from personal experience, antivirus applications really are only as good as their latest update. After all, any antivirus application can only scan for those viruses and forms of malware that they have been programmed to look for. Whenever a new virus appears on the horizon, the antivirus application must first receive an update before it knows to scan for this particular program. For this very specific reason, updating Activeshield should be a high priority for its users.

Although it is true that any malware that it has already been programmed to detect can still be discovered, any form of virus or worm that Activeshield hasn’t been updated to find can easily slip in. Therefore, updating Activeshield on a regular basis is of paramount importance in order to protect the computer’s security and resources.

Plus, nothing good ever comes from computer viruses, spyware, or worms. Too much malware on a computer will only slow it down.  Therefore, automatically updating Activeshield should also be a high priority on anyone’s list, especially if they are prone to forgetting things. To update your version of Activeshield, select the link that is listed for updates.

Four individual options are available for Activeshield as part of the McAfee Internet Security Suite Antivirus application. Within the automatic update configuration box, these options are labeled:

• Install the updates automatically and let me know when the product is loaded.
• Download the updates automatically and notify me when they are ready to be installed.
• Notify me before downloading any updates.
• Disable automatic updating and let me manually check for updates.

The first option is the obvious pick. After all, it involves the least amount of input and time from the user once it is enabled. The updates will occur automatically and become seamlessly integrated into the application, leaving the computer well protected without any human input.

While it is possible to allow the updates to download automatically and then wait for your input to install them, it is much simpler to have them automatically downloaded and installed at the same time. For those who don’t appreciate the minor sluggishness that might occur during this process, the second or third option might appear to be more agreeable.

It is important to note that if you are using a different version of this application, the wording might be slightly different, but the ideas are all the same. The most important thing to remember is to update your antivirus applications for the newest version so that you have the latest protection available.

Activeshield has several advanced options, all of which can prove useful in protecting the computer’s resources and security. Another one of these important advanced options of Activeshield is the E-mail Scanning function.  The E-mail Scanning function is located in the advanced Activeshield options configuration box to the left of ScriptStopper near the top of the box. I simply click on the word, E-mail Scanning to discover what steps I need to take to activate this feature. Beneath this heading, several options are listed that clearly indicate the parameters that I can use to run the scanning feature.

First, I discover that I can determine what type of email communications I want to scan with the E-Mail scan option for Activeshield. I can select either one or both of the following options: inbound e-mail messages or outbound e-mail messages. In front of each option is a small box that I can click in order to enter a checkmark indicating that I want to select that particular option. For me, both options are going to be scanned since I both send and receive quite a few e-mails in the course of a day.

Next, I discover that I can also determine what I want to happen once the program for the inbound e-mail messages option discovers the threat. I discover two more options for that. If I select the first option, then any incoming attachments that are infected will be cleaned automatically. If I select the second option, then I will be prompted and notified that an incoming attachment needs to be cleaned.

Selecting the second option doesn’t appear to be a wise choice for me. Giving me the power to decide what to do with the prompts simply means that I have a lot more to do with the program. Part of the fun in having software do most of the work for me is simply that- having the software application do the work. Since I don’t want to be bothered with warnings or prompts that something might be amiss, I would rather select the automatic monitoring and cleaning up of infected attachments.

In theory, a computer that never becomes infected with a virus or worm will not create any infected outbound email communications. However, I think it is best to select this option since it provides the ultimate in protecting a computer system from issuing infected email communication to every single person listed in the address book that is stored on the computer.

Since worms and viruses typically enter a computer system through e-mails, it is important to scan email communications in order to detect them before they can do any damage to the system. I think it is worth it to have peace of mind that the security and safety of my computer is being protected on a regular basis.

Activeshield has quite a few advanced options and anyone who wants to get the best use out of this software application should take advantage of their existence. One of these advanced options of Activeshield is ScriptStopper. This function is designed to identify worm activity patterns through the existence of running scripts on an active computer. Running scripts are often associated with worms, so they are indicative of wormlike behavior. Since I don’t want worms infecting my machine and creating problems for its operational patterns, I find this option to be useful in combating an infection by worms.

To locate the ScriptStopper option for Activeshield, I need to open the configuration box for advanced options. Within the configuration box that pops up to display the advanced options of Activeshield, I have four different options for my selections. ScriptStopper is to the left of WormStopper, located near the far right hand side near the top of the box. I click on the word, ScriptStopper to determine the steps that I need to take to activate it.

The only entry that I can make beneath this heading once I click on the ScriptStopper tab is an easy one. I can either enable ScriptStopper to function by clicking the box in front of the words “enable ScriptStopper,” or I can select not to enable it to function by not clicking the box in front of the words “enable ScriptStopper.” No other options need to be determined or selected. It’s a simple decision with a readymade answer.

Once I enable the ScriptStopper function of Activeshield, all of the monitoring is done for me automatically by the software functionality. I can sit back and relax as ScriptStopper does the work for me, searching for signs of running scripts and deciphering the nature of them in real time. If I enable ScriptStopper by clicking the box to enter a checkmark, Activeshield actively monitors the scripts that are currently running on the computer to detect and identify wormlike activity.

It is true that it might help to understand that scripts are small programs. Although many legitimate programs run scripts of some type, worms also make use of scripting to infect computers as well as to propagate themselves. Therefore, the existence of scripts can be an indication that worms have infected a computer. If running scripts show signs of wormlike activity, what exactly are worms?

WormStopper is one of the primary selections within the advanced options of Activeshield. Since it is designed to monitor my computer system for signs of wormlike activity, I believe that configuring this feature of Activeshield in order to protect my machine from worms is an excellent idea. Plus, it is easy to configure and use.

Understanding how worms get onto a computer and what they can do to disrupt the functioning of it is behind my decision to use WormStopper. After all, I think that it is very important to understand what it is that I am dealing with in order to make an informed decision regarding the security of my computer and personal information.

Plus, I know from personal experience how irate the people in my address book can get whenever a worm infects my computer and sends annoying emails to all of them. The cycle just keeps repeating itself with the people in their address book until the worm is removed from every computer that becomes infected.

To locate Activeshield’s WormStopper, I need to look at the configuration box for the advanced options. Within the box that pops up for advanced options of Activeshield, I have four options. WormStopper is to the far right hand side near the top of the box. The first entry that I can make beneath this is to enable WormStopper to function by clicking the box or to elect not to enable it by not clicking the box. Beneath this entry, I discover several additional options.

The first entry here allows me to set up pattern matching. Selecting this entry enables the WormStopper function of Activeshield to scrutinize network and email activity for any patterns that are considered basic to the manner in which worms behave.

I can also set up alerts that would notify me whenever an e-mail is sent to a number (one that I specify through a drop down menu) of recipients. Plus, I can also set up alerts that would notify me whenever a certain number (one that I specify through a drop down menu) of e-mails are sent within a certain number (one that I specify through a drop down menu) of seconds. Each of these thresholds is used to define what activity on the computer is identified as wormlike activity.

More specifically, these checkboxes let me set the parameters that define suspicious wormlike activity on my computer. Since I know that worms are often propagated via email, it only makes sense to target this type of activity as suspicious. After all, how many times have I sent one email to everyone in my entire address book? I know my answer is zero times, so this type of activity would definitely be a red flag for me. Yet, I might very well send a single e-mail to at least five people, so I wouldn’t set the parameter at five individuals.

Alternatively, computer users who have this application can leave these options blank and just rely on WormStopper to identify all suspicious activity for them. Plus, if WormStopper starts to flag personal emails, the options on these last two options can always be adjusted.

Having Activeshield enabled on my computer means that it runs automatically without any input from me once I have it configured to my specifications. Therefore, it does its own scanning and monitoring for malware or bad programs that I don’t want on my computer. Why wouldn’t I want to have Activeshield scanning my computer? No reason that I can think of.Plus, I know that if I enable Activeshield to function, my computer will most likely remain free of worms, viruses, and other significant forms of malware. Therefore, enabling Activeshield should protect my computer from any major threats to its security. Personally, I think that is the best strategy since protecting my personal data from scrutiny by unwanted visitors is on the top of my list as far as secure computer practices. Plus, using Activeshield consistently should help to keep my computer running smoothly.

However, even the best performing program can encounter a glitch or two and some undesirable form of malware might sneak through and start to create a mess on my machine. Therefore, scheduling periodic system scans to run along with Activeshield’s automatic scans can act as an extra form of computer security insurance, so I recommend it.

The process to set up scans is relatively easy. Plus, this feature includes a number of options that allow me to set up periodic virus scans without interrupting my use of the computer by selecting a time when I will not be using my computer. For example, if I decide to have my computer on all night long, I can set up Activeshield to scan while I am sleeping.

When setting up Activeshield scans, I simply follow several simple steps. First, I have to select the box in front of the phrase “scan my computer at a scheduled time” in the configuration box for options.

Beneath this, the current schedule and the time of the next scan are listed. Beneath that, I have an option to edit the schedule by selecting the edit tab. Once I do that, I have the opportunity to select how often I want the scan to run- daily, weekly, monthly, at the system start up, at logon, when the machine is idle, or for a single time.

Which selection I choose determines the remainder of the options that I will get next. For example, if I choose to scan on a daily basis, I can select how many days I want to have pass in between scans. If I select the weekly option, then I can select the day that I want the scan to run. If I select the monthly option, then I can select the day of the month that I want the scan to run. The rest of the options are similar to these. If I don’t feel up to the challenge of deciding when and how often to run the virus scan, then I can always elect to set it to the default by clicking the default tab. I like all of these options as well as the opportunity to provide even better security for my machine.

Unfortunately, errors can occur with any type of software application. When it does, however, you don’t need to worry or feel stressed out. Typically, the solution to fixing the errors and making them go away is relatively easy.Getting rid of Activeshield errors from your computer to restore the proper functioning of the application typically involves one of several different strategies. Each of the strategies can be tried until the correct one is utilized and the program is restored. Unless, you have a clear idea as to the nature of the error and you simply want to try and use that method first.

For example, sometimes the message that some components of Activeshield are missing or not installed properly pops up. The reason could be that the component or file has been corrupted or is actually no longer present due to any number of reasons. Simply go through each of the following scenarios in order to troubleshoot the cause and fix it.

In some cases, the existence of other antivirus applications can be the root cause of any problems that occur with Activeshield. Incompatibility between the two applications could be the problem. Therefore, if any other antivirus applications exist on the computer, it should be removed. In most cases, using the add/remove program that is located in the control panel will do the trick. Locate this utility and open it up.

Next, simply scroll through the programs that are listed and remove any antivirus programs that you find with the exception of the version of McAfee that has been installed. I’ve used this feature tons of times and it is easy and quick.

Another possible solution to the problem involves the reinstallation of that version of McAfee. First, the program must be uninstalled using the add/remove program that is located in the control panel. The computer should be rebooted prior to reinstallation. The McAfee program disk can be used for reinstalling the program or it can be reinstalled onto the computer from the McAfee website. Reinstallation of the program should resolve any issues relating to corrupt files with the Activeshield application.

If neither one of the above strategies has corrected the problem for you, it is time to check the computer for viruses. You should run a virus scan to determine whether your computer is infected. If a virus does exist, it will have to be removed. Once the virus is removed, see if Activeshield will again perform its tasks. If not, it might be necessary to follow the above strategy for reinstallation of the program.

If an error occurs while initializing Activeshield, the problem could be related to the fact that too many programs are currently open or running on the computer. Simply close the programs and attempt to run Activeshield again.

If nothing that you try works to repair Activeshield or if you simply don’t feel like going through the hassle, you can always use a third party software application to resolve the issue. Quite a few third party software applications have been designed to help resolve issues with corrupt files leading to software application malfunctioning.
