- Say goodbye to rush hour traffic jams -- and commute from your kitchen to your basement.
- Say goodbye to formal business attire -- and work in your sweatsuit or your underwear.
- Say goodbye to a career that's dependent on the whims of other people -- and make as little or as much money as you're willing to put in the time and work.
Millions of Americans and people around the world have told their bosses where to put their day jobs and now work for themselves from home. Many millions more still keep their day jobs but are providing valuable extra income to their families by working from home. You can throw away your alarm clock for good or add to your family's bottom line.
You can make more money or even ditch your day job -- by working from home. Here are the top 5 ways. They make not make you a millionaire, but they've done that for plenty of other people. And you'll be spending your life doing something you enjoy. Break free from your slavery to the alarm clock.
Many people want the benefits of working out of their own houses, but don't know what they can do to make at least as much money as they do from their jobs. Here are the most common and popular ways to make money from home. These are broad categories, and there're endless possibilities in each of them, but they will help to focus your thinking about what kind of in-home business would be best for you.
1. In-Person Product Sales
This category includes network marketing, party sales, Mary Kay, and so on. You can promote nutritional supplements, Tupperware, lingerie, specialty gift items, cosmetics, soap powder, long distance telephone services, adult toys . . . any and everything that can benefit from in-person explanations and testimonials.
This category does require good people skills. Your income and continuing success depends upon building and maintaining a network of repeat customers and referrals. Also, since most companies do pay you some type of override on recruits, you'll want to sign up and train new people. (However, beware of network marketing companies that put their primary emphasis on recruiting new representatives instead of selling the actual products.)
Selling this way can also be called referral marketing or recommendation marketing. Your job is to refer interested people to products or services. You recommend the products or services to them. You may invite them to a meeting, to attend a party, to listen to a pre-recorded telephone call, or to visit a website for further information.
Although you make money from "selling" products, you must NOT come across as a "real" salesperson. You must act and sound as a regular person who's recommending a product in the same way you'd tell a friend about a great new restaurant or fun new movie. You'll do well if you just plain enjoy meeting and talking to new people, and telling them about your products.
You want to look for a line of products you enjoy yourself, because your honest recommendation and testimonial is important. You want to represent a company that's established and honest, with a good reputation. You should look for a compensation plan that will pay you well, but don't sacrifice quality of product or company reputation for a few extra dollars per sale.
You'll also want to sign up under a sponsor who will teach you proven methods to succeed and will hold your hand and help you until you've earned some money and have developed your skills and confidence.
The biggest drawback to this type of business is the high turnover rate. You can eliminate that problem within yourself by first picking a quality company with a line of great products you enjoy using yourself. As long as you're representing products you're personally passionate about, you can make good money just by selling them -- whether you choose to recruit other representatives or not. And by teaching your representatives to do the same, you'll minimize the number who drop out on you and its impact on your monthly income.
2. Internet Affiliate Marketing
Large numbers of people make money by selling products and services online. The basic concept is similar to the first method. You sell a product, and so you get a percentage of the sale.
Many of the same "non" (or "pre")-selling sales skills are needed, but because all the action takes place online, you don't need any in-person people ability. Telling a product story that gets people excited will still increase your success. So will establishing relationships with a circle of people you contact regularly by email. Once they know you and like you, they'll buy new products you recommend. And a lot of your income depends on how many visitors you can attract to your website.
With in-person product sales you leverage your time by recruiting other representatives on whose sales you receive an override. With affiliate marketing, you leverage your time by putting up more websites that continue to operate and make sales for you even while you're sleeping or putting up new websites.
Unlike in-person product sales, as an affiliate you have total freedom about what industries, companies and products you promote. You can choose to concentrate on one industry -- or sell everything from vitamins to vacuum cleaners. You can sell eyeliner from one cosmetics company and lipstick from another. You can sell ebooks and books on Amazon. You can put links on your website to 10 different competing products and let your prospects choose which one is best for them, yet you get paid no matter which one they buy.

3. Online Auctions -- Especially eBay
This is probably the most popular way to make money online. eBay began as a great way for collectors to buy and sell items, and it's still good for that. But it's expanded so that it's now truly the largest marketplace in the world. You can buy and sell almost anything legal - from antiques to Zen books.
People have come up with many ways to obtain goods at a profit. Haunt yard and estate sales, go to store closings, buy wholesale, buy distressed products, and so on. Many people have come up with ingenious ways to add value so that they make more money. Decorate old clothes. Assemble model cars that are generally sold as a bag of parts. Use some craft skills to turn old junk into cool works of art.
Once you get good at the process of listing items for sale at eBay, you can make money just for doing that for people who're cleaning out their basements and garages. All you need is a digital camera and a flair for describing items so prospects want to buy and bid high. If you meet eBay's criteria, they will list you as an official eBay Trading Assistant.
4. Provide Creative/Professional Services
Do you have some talent or valuable skill? The list of possibilities here includes: writing, graphic design, recording phone messages in funny voices, playing guitar in bands, making crafts, replacing water pumps, styling hair, reading Tarot cards for customers calling psychic hotlines, writing software programs, making delicious brownies, drawing up horoscopes and on and on.
Think hard about what you know, what you can do, your talents, skills, interests and experiences. The rarer your skill or talent, the more money you can charge. Graphic designers command more money than people who clean houses. The more valuable your service, the more money you can charge. Graphic designers for mail order companies make more money than those who design postcards.
Think of ways to add value to what you do. Many people can babysit children -- but people trained to give them proper exercise (Even babies should get regular exercise and, yes, there are things you can and should do to give them that exercise.) can command a lot more money than simple babysitters from upscale but busy parents worried about childhood obesity.
5. Sell Information
Many people make part and full time incomes by selling information. If you're old enough to read this article, you've had to learn how to solve some of life's problems. You have learned about things that interest you, and if they interest you they interest other people. Again, think about what you know (or can find out) that can help people. Or what you (or can find out) that will make people's lives better, or just plain entertain them.
You have many options. You can self-publish your own book. You can put up websites. You can write ebooks. You can publish short reports. You can host teleconference calls. You can host online seminars. You can charge to send out lessons by email. Information can also take other forms: you can write software programs, record songs and make your own digital movies.
The most popular category of information is how to make money. Another popular subject is any and everything about relationships. How to find love, get a date, pick up women, get married, get divorced, and more. Another category that's common because it's so important to us is health: diabetitic care, how to lose weight, how to exercise, which vitamins to take and so on.
People will also pay for information on their other needs, and their interests and passions. How to catch more bass, play a better game of golf, and take care of their elderly parents.
Think about something that bugs you in your life. Research how to solve it. Once you've solved it in your life, you can teach others to do the same, using yourself as your own best testimonial.
There you go -- five broad categories with plenty of room for creativity, enterprise and just plain hard work. I guarantee you that each type of work at home business has made many people millionaires. I can't guarantee you'll make that much, but nobody is holding you back.
Many people cut cross these categories. They sell networking marketing products over the Internet and, after they're successful, write and sell books teaching others to do the same. eBay PowerSellers promote information products. Online ebook writers also sell affiliate products -- even the ebooks of their competition!
The only hard fast rule is -- you can't make money at home until after you've begun your business. So get going!
