Q1: When trying to log into my PC, it gives me one option: press F1. What is the solution of this problem? Q2: How can I create a password for my PC?Susan Keenan

Several different causes for this annoying problem could be at play. The good news is that once you troubleshoot possible causes, you should be able to fix the problem.

Troubleshooting Prompt to Press F1: Replace CMOS Battery

When the CMOS battery begins to fail, the prompt to press the "F1" key appears each time you attempt to boot up. This is the way that the battery lets you know that it is dying and running out of power. The solution here is to simply replace the CMOS battery.

The lifetime of a CMOS battery varies. Check your computer's documentation to see where your CMOS battery is located, what style it is, and how to replace it. One easy way to see if your battery is going bad is to check your computer's time and day setting. Usually, these will be incorrect if your battery is losing its power.

Troubleshooting Prompt to Press F1: Hardware Issue

In some instances, recently installed hardware may be the problem. If this is the reason for the prompt to press the "F1" key, you might be able to resolve it simply by entering setup and saving the settings. This type of issue usually occurs if CMOS hasn't been able to verify that your new hardware has actually been set up properly. Once you save the settings, the prompt should no longer appear each time you boot up.

How to Create a Password on a Computer

The exact steps that you use to create a password on your computer will vary depending on the operating system and version that you are using. Basically, you are going to go into your user account and search for the option that lets you set a password.

You are going to complete some variation of the following: go into the "Control Panel" for the computer, select "User Accounts," select "Your Account," select either the option to "Create a Password," or "Change How Users Login," and follow the prompts. Make sure you use a password that you will remember or write it down some place safe just in case you forget what your password is.
