I tried to open an original DVD video disc with DVD@ccess (this program is part of a DVD I tried to play). It is a BUP file. Have I (and why) to buy extra program to use it?Kate Dubensky

DVD related files that have BUP extensions are backup IFO files that contain details and information about the DVD. Neither IFO nor BUP files are encrypted, though typically BUP files are only accessed if the IFO file is corrupted or otherwise damaged.

DVD IFO files - or Video Disc Information Files - are used to store data and details about the DVD contents, including headers that tell the DVD player how and when to display different screens at startup and where the different chapters stop and start. IFO files also contain details about audio tracks and their coordination with the video data. IFO and backup BUP files only contain information, not actual video or audio data. The data is stored on related VOB and VRO files.

You don't need to buy an additional program to open BUP files, but you might need to download a more sophisticated video player program, if the one you are using can't open the file. VLC is a popular free downloadable video player that is notorious for being able to open almost every video-related file type.

DVD@ccess is a program designed by Apple to add enhanced playback features to video discs. DVD@access was originally designed for use with Apple's DVD Studio Pro. If this is the program you are using, you should be able to use its Help pages to access more specific instructions about your DVD and its functions. You can also load the DVD@ccess function on a PC and work there, but you might need to get additional software for this.

If you want to open BUP or IFO files on a DVD to add functions, as is supported by the DVD Studio Pro and DVD@ccess function, you can use this link to visit the Mac support page for creating and embedding links.

To summarize, BUP files store backup data information about DVD files - but DVD@access allows you to alter and add information into these files. To simply view the BUP files, a video player like VLC should suffice. To alter and add information, you will need to install and use DVD Studio Pro.

I hope this helps!
