File Extension XXX

I have a problem with file.xxx what should I do? The file is supposed to be an installation file.Susan Keenan

What is File Extension .xxx?
File extension .xxx is associated with a couple of different applications. It is associated with a number of different applications, making it tough to know exactly which one to use. Because the applications vary, one .xxx file isn’t necessarily compatible with another .xxx file.

How to Open .xxx File Extensions

If you know which application you were trying to use with it, simply check the manufacturer’s website to see if any updates or patches exist for the program.

If you have uninstalled the application, thinking that you need not need it, reinstall it now so that you will be able to open the .xxx file extension.

If the application is already installed, try uninstalling it and reinstalling with all other applications on the computer closed.

Look at the next section to see the list of programs that I have found that can be used to open xxx files.

What Programs Open File Extension .xxx?

  • The Unreal Engine 3 game uses this type of a file extension.
  • Corel Corporation has a program titled “Paint Shop Photo Album Panorama” that uses the .xxx file.
  • Controlware VJ400 Digital CCTV Recording also utilizes the .xxx file extension.
  • The Compucon/Singer PSW Embroidery Design Application uses a file of this type.

Picasa and the xxx.mov File Extension

If this is the file that you are referencing is Picasa’s xxx.mov file extension, you should be able to resolve the issue by downloading the latest updates/versions of either Windows Media Player (WMP) or Quicktime.

What Happens When the .xxx File Extension Cannot Be Accessed?

If the problem that you are experiencing is one in which you receive a message that the file is being used by another process, you could be experiencing a temporary glitch with your virus scanning software. Try opening the program that uses the .xxx file extension when your virus scanning program is not running. If you allow it to remain resident on your computer constantly, try disabling it temporarily and then try using the application in question.

What Happens When the .xxx File Is a Merged File?

If your .xxx file is a merged conglomeration, it could create the type of problem where you need to obtain a special program to access it. Although I cannot vouch for them since I haven’t used them, you can try “Camel’s MPG Joiner,” if you are using MPGs. Also, “Pecks Power Join” is available for .avi. These are free applications that you can search for and use.

Clean the Registry

Since problems with files can arise due to registry problems, take the time to clean the registry with a reliable registry cleaner such as RegCure. While you are at it, run a reliable anti-spyware/anti-virus application since the existence of some form of malware could also be creating the problem with your .xxx file. I can recommend Anti-Virus PLUS.

Programs opening file extensions generally occur because either the application that you need is missing/faulty or the registry is experiencing issues.
