How would I take music from my iPod, put it to the computer, and then make CDs?
There is a legal issue involved with your question which I will explain in the first section. I’ll also offer you an alternative way to obtain a CD from iTunes music.
Transferring iPod Music to PC
Apple does not allow iPod users to transfer music from their iPods to computers due to its copy-protection scheme. Obviously, Apple does not want to encourage illegal transfer of its music from one individual to another. If Apple allowed individual users to transfer their iPod music to their computer, they would be setting up the stage for these users to share the music with multiple users.
Many of the songs that are downloadable from the iTunes store on Apple’s website come with a related fee. If iPod users were to share their songs, this fee would be circumvented and Apple would not draw the income that they currently do. Unfortunately, what I am saying to you is that you cannot legally transfer the music from your iPod to your computer. The music folder has been designed to be “invisible” in order to prevent average users from getting around the copyright issue.
Download iTunes Software onto Computer
If you want to make personal CDs from the songs that you download from the iTunes website onto your computer, then you need to go about the business of downloading iTunes software onto your computer. Apple offers its iTunes software free of charge. Just visit Apple’s website for the iTunes download. You might already have the software on the computer if you are using the computer to download the music that you place on the iPod. However, once you place it on the iPod, you won’t be able to retrieve it for burning to a CD.
Transferring iTunes Library to a CD
If you want to transfer your entire iTunes Library to a CD for personal use, you can use the following directions for creating a backup of your iTunes Library music.
1) Open the iTunes software on your computer.
2) Select “File” from the options.
3) Select “Library” from the options.
4) Select “Back up disc” from the options.
5) Next, you’ll have to select one of the following choices from the dialog box (”iTunes Backup”) that appears: “Back up iTunes Store purchases” or “Back up entire iTunes library and play lists.”
6) Insert a single blank CD.
7) Select the option “Back Up.” Insert additional discs as needed. You will receive a prompt notifying you of this.
Transferring iTunes Music to a CD
If you want to burn a single CD, follow these directions to burn a single playlist onto a CD.
1) Open the iTunes software on your computer.
2) Select the playlist that you want to burn onto a CD. If you want to rearrange the songs, do so now by dragging them around in the list.
3) Insert a CD into the CD drive.
4) Since the CD is going to receive the same name as the playlist, you need to change the name for the playlist if you want something different. To do so, double click on the playlist and then change the name to the one that you want.
5) Before selecting the option to burn, check on the size of the playlist at the bottom of the iTunes window and make sure that you have enough CDs to cover it.
6) When you are ready, select the “Burn Disc” button. The songs will be copied from the computer to the CD.
