Hotmail Account Hacked!

Somebody has changed my password on my Hotmail address and I can’t access my account. Can you help please?Kate Dubensky

How did your Account get Hacked?

Arg! That’s terrible. Sometimes email accounts can be hijacked by malware running on your computer, if you accidentally opened or downloaded an infected file, or if you visited a malicious website that managed to access your system. In any case, it’s not good. Before you worry about your Hotmail account, you might want to update your antivirus and malware protection software and run some system scans to make sure that whatever happened to your email account isn’t lurking on your computer.

Try the Hotmail “Forgotten Password” Link to Reset

Most email accounts, including Hotmail, ask users to set a secret question and answer that you can use to verify your identity in the event that you forget your password or have your account stolen and your password changed. On the Hotmail sign in page you’ll see a Forgot your Password link that you can follow to answer the secret question and retrieve your password. If this works, you should definitely change your password right away. Follow this link https://account.live.com/ResetPassword.aspx and then follow the procedure to request your new password.

Contact Windows Live Tech Support

If this doesn’t work, then I’m afraid that you will need to contact Windows Live Technical Support and hope that you can provide some account information that can verify that this is in fact your account. Of course, since you can’t access your account, you will need to open a new account to use to contact Microsoft.

  1. Go to https://support.live.com/
  2. Under Standard Services, choose Windows Live Hotmail
  3. In the Search For text box, enter a keyword - such as hacked or hijacked - then submit
  4. Choose a relevant search result entry
  5. On the lower, right-hand corner, click Get More Help
  6. Next, click Get Support
  7. Fill in the email form that opens and describe the problem
  8. Click Submit

A technician will reply to your query - Microsoft aims to reply within 24 hours. I hope that you are able to reclaim your address! At the very least, if you are required to keep a new account, you should be able to recover your address book and emails. Good luck!
