HP Photosmart HP 2610 Printer Problem

Our HP 2610 photosmart printer will not turn on. The power adapter output reads about 65 volts vs 31. Could this over voltage condition have damaged the printer’s motherboard? Should I invest in a new power adapter before buying a new printer?

Check the hardware and confirm the power levels

It is possible that a power surge has fried your printer, however it is difficult to say definitively without some more specific information. The user’s manual that came with your printer should have some information about dangerous power input and output levels. If you not able to find this information in your user’s manual, you could contact HP customer service for more details, and I’m sure their technicians would be able to diagnose your power adapter reading. Unfortunately, HP has discontinued the Photosmart 2610 All-in-One Printer, Fax, Scanner, Copier machine, so finding advanced tech support online might be difficult. Since it sounds likely that you are having a hardware issue, you might need to take your machine into a technician for an analysis. But, before you pack your printer into the car, there are some things to try at home.

Troubleshooting a printer that won’t turn on

To troubleshoot your machine, first determine if there is a power module - a black and silver rectangular box - attached to your power cord. If there is a power module adapter, disconnect the power cord from the wall as well as from your printer. After at least 30 seconds reconnect the cord, first to the printer, and then to the wall.

Check the power source

If there is no power adapter, unplug the cord from the wall, and the printer, if possible. If you are using any power bar multiple plugs or surge protectors, bypass them by plugging in to the wall directly. If the printer doesn’t turn on, make sure to try another outlet, in another room, to make sure that the problem isn’t the power outlet.

Check the power cord

The next option is to connect your power cord to another HP unit, to see if the cord works. You might have to take your power cord or power adapter to a computer shop to access another HP printer. If the power doesn’t come on, then you know the problem is in the cord, or at least one problem. At this point, try connecting a different cord to your printer to make sure that there isn’t another problem with the printer itself. If the printer works when you substitute another cord, then you know that the problem is in the power cord.
