My Epson 8400 will not print. How do I correct this?

Susan KeenanPrinters fail for a variety of reasons. Go through each of the suggestions here to try and discover a solution. Hopefully, you will find one before you get to the end.

Troubleshooting the Epson 8400 Printer: Access the Device Manager

The Device Manager can be used in an attempt to find out why your printer isn't working. Follow these directions to use it:

1)      Click "Start."

2)      Click "Control Panel."

3)      Click "Performance and Maintenance."

4)      Click "System."

5)      Click "Hardware."

6)      Click "Device Manager."

If the Epson 8400 printer has an identifiable problem, a black exclamation point will show in the yellow background. A problem code should be displayed that explains the problem for you.

If a red "X" shows, the printer has been disabled, meaning the driver has not been loaded properly or it has become corrupted. If the red "X" is present, install the correct driver, which you can get from the Epson website.

If a blue "i" with a white background shows, then this simply indicates that the printer was manually selected. This doesn't suggest a problem with the printer and so, you will have to continue troubleshooting.

If a "green" question mark appears next to the printer name (Epson 8400), then the driver has been properly installed. The "green" question mark will only appear on computers with Windows Me. Its presence simply means that some functionality might not be present, but the printer should still function.

Troubleshooting the Epson 8400 Printer: Re-installing the Printer

Re-installing the printer often solves problematic issues with the printer. This is especially true if this is the first time that you are installing the printer. It can happen when memory resources are low. Use the "Add/Remove" hardware utility in your computer's "Control Panel" to remove and reinstall the printer. Since the Windows Operating System includes the drivers for most printers, it installs the drivers and printer automatically. Just connect your printer to the computer and turn the computer on. First, you should close all other programs whenever troubleshooting a device or installing it.

Troubleshooting the Epson 8400 Printer: Updating Printer Drivers

As technology improves and as we add more and more applications and hardware devices to our computers, it sometimes becomes necessary to update the drivers for it. To get your drivers, visit this link: Epson Stylus cx 8400 to download. Make sure that you select the correct operating system first.

It infuriates me that the printer decides when I need ink. The printer will not function AT ALL if I need one Color!!!!!!! Please help. I want to disable that function.

I know how you feel. My if my HP is out of color ink, it won't print black text. It's annoying to have to run out and spend $30 for color ink when I have plenty of black and all I want to do is print a few pages of black text. The opposite is true too. If I'm out of black ink but have plenty of color ink, the printer refuses to print using color only. With other printers, I could change the color of the text to blue or purple and at least get a color printout until I had time to go to the store. Now, the printer simply won't work on one cartridge. Grrrrr.

I'm not sure if there's a way to turn this off, but I'm all for checking it out! I'll start researching . . .

Looks like there's no way to disable the function. The Epson uses color inks to "prime" the print heads. In reading reviews on this particular printer, you're not alone in this. I wish I had a better answer. I know that I would be happy to live with slightly off color documents until I had a chance to replace a cartridge because sometimes you just need a printout and it doesn't have to be perfect.
