I have windows 98 and have received a gift of a Tom Tom navigator, but when I load it I get a bunch of missing dll’s, kernel32dll, pspai and so forth. How do I fix this? Walk me through. Thanks.
What you’re seeing are DLL errors when you are trying to install a new program. The good news is that this is a pretty easy fix.
DLL stands for Dynamic Link Library files. These are files that are a combination of small programs that are used by the executable program that is running. These files allow the executable program to work with the external device. They may also contain source codes for specific functions.
So where did the DLL files go? Sometimes programs share DLL files with other programs that get modified or deleted because they are no longer being used. Sometimes a program assumes that you will have the DLL files on the computer so they don’t include them at all.
System File Checker
The first thing to try is to run the System File Checker on your computer. Follow these steps to run this on Windows 98:
- Go to Start and then Programs and choose Accessories.
- Choose System Tools and then System Information and Tools.
- Go to System File Checker from the Microsoft Information toolbar.
- Enable the Check for Changed Files and Check for Deleted Files boxes.
System File Checker will scan for damaged DLLs and will replace original ones that are missing. This program may take awhile to run, so make sure you have enough time.
Download DLL Files
If System File Checker doesn’t work for your problem, the best way to fix these DLL errors is to download the ones you need from a freeware website. If you don’t have many DLL errors showing, you can either Google them individually to find sites that have them available, or go to a site such as DLLfiles.com. I found both of the DLLs you listed on this site, but they are common and you can find them fairly easily anywhere. Download the DLLs and save them to your Windows/System directory. Make sure you are running good antivirus software before you start downloading files from the web.
If you have too many DLL errors to download each one manually, you can use a program such as Instant registry fixes or RegCure. These programs cost a little bit of money, but should fix all of your DLL error problems in one go.
Once you’ve fixed the DLL problems, you should be able to load your TomTom software with no trouble. Happy navigating!
