A Device Driver Catch-22
This is quite a catch-22 as updating device drivers typically requires a connection to the Internet in order to find and download the appropriate driver for your hardware. Unfortunately, when it comes to the modem not working, connecting to the Internet isn’t necessarily an option.
Options for Downloading Drivers from Remote Computers
While your computer won’t connect to the Internet and you must use someone else’s computer in your quest for help, you do have options. Do you have a USB stick? These are quite handy in these situations as most computers have USB ports. For example, once you locate the correct driver, simply download it to the USB stick rather than your friend’s computer’s hard drive. From there, take the USB stick to your own computer and install the Micro Star drivers on your PC.
Where to Find Micro Star Drivers
Micro Star’s Web site is the obvious first choice. Micro Star (or MCI) now has a Live Update Online feature that makes updating MCI drivers fairly easy - if the modem works and you can connect that is. The Web site also has a manual search. I tried searching for your MS 6946 modem and came up empty. That’s not to say that Micro Star can’t help you, it just means that you may have to contact their tech support directly for discontinued device drivers or device drivers not listed on the Web site. In the U.S., you can call MCI at 626-913-0828 or visit http://www.mcicomputer.com/. Contact information for other countries is available on this Web page.
Try your Computer Manufacturer
When the manufacturer of a device doesn’t have drivers listed, your next best step is to contact the computer manufacturer. For example, if you have a Gateway computer, go to the Download section of Gateway’s Web site and search for your exact model of computer. Likewise, if you have a Dell, go to Dell’s Web site. If you have a Sony, head on over to Sony’s Web site, and so on. Most manufacturers bundle device driver updates per model and make them available for download. Again, you’ll need to use a friend’s computer and download any updates found to your USB stick, floppy disc, or a recordable CD.
