I’m running WIN XP SP3. I had to reload Windows Desktop Publishing. It appeared to load OK, but when I run it, I get the message that it cannot find PUBOLEUI.DLL. Is it possible to download a copy from somewhere or what should I do?

Kat DelongThrough all my searches, I couldn’t find any reference to this particular .dll error, except one that was written by Microsoft in French that wasn’t very helpful. As you’ve guessed, this .dll error is associated with Windows Desktop Publishing, a program that Microsoft no longer supports. There are programs that will allow you to download missing .dll files, but these deal with only the most common .dll errors - although most of them run about 1,000 files - and I couldn’t find a program that contained this particular error.

Dll Files

Dll files are Dynamic Link Library files that are used by the executable program that is running. Because there are so many associated with so many programs, .dll errors are not uncommon. The problem you have is that this is an unusual .dll error associated with an old product.

System Restore

If Windows Desktop Publishing was working at an earlier date, you could roll back your computer to a date where it was working using System Restore. You don’t say why you had to reinstall Desktop Publishing, but I’m guessing it was when you upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 3, which would mean that you don’t want to restore to a date before this service pack was installed.

Reinstall

Sometimes, doing a complete uninstall and then reinstall of the program in question can eliminate some .dll errors. Make sure that you have looked through your system and removed everything associated with the Desktop Publishing program before you do a clean reinstall.

Registry Fix

Using a program such as RegCure can help you restore and clean up registry files. You can find RegCure here.

Install a Desktop Publishing Program

I’m not sure what you are using the desktop publishing program for, but if it is just for home or small office use, you might be better off uninstalling Windows Desktop Publishing and installing another, more updated program. Desktop publishing programs vary in cost and features, so we’ve listed a few starting choices here:

Adobe Desktop Publishing is more high end, but one of the top choices for professionals. Their InDesign program is pricey at around $700, but you can also get Pagemaker for about $500.

Microsoft Office Publisher is another Microsoft product that will set you back approximately $150: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/default.aspx .

There are several freeware programs that still contain quality components that might be right for your applications. Two to try are:

Scribus: http://www.scribus.net/ and Serif Page Plus: http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/.

Hopefully, one of the fixes we’ve listed here will do the trick. If not, consider an upgrade to a new publishing program based on your usage and needs.
