What is JavaScript?
JavaScript is a scripting language that is used on Web pages. Developers insert the JavaScript code directly into the HTML of the Web site. Many people use the terms JavaScript and Java interchangeably. However, JavaScript and Java are not the same thing. JavaScript is a scripting language based on Java. JavaScript is responsible for various web effects such as mouseovers, banner rotations, dropdown menus, and other interactive content. JavaScript was originally designed by Netscape for use with the Netscape browser but is compatible with all platforms and Web browsers.
Enabling JavaScript in Internet Explorer 6 and Above
In order for your Web browser to work with JavaScript pages, you must first “enable” it to do so. In Internet Explorer 6 and above, this process is quite simple. First, go to the Tools >Internet Options menu and then click on the Security tab. Click on “Custom Level” and then scroll to the “Scripting” area. Look for “Active Scripting” and select “Enable.” Click the OK button and enter “Yes” when prompted.
Enabling JavaScript in Safari 2 or Above
If you use the Safari browser, you can enable JavaScript by going to the Safari >Preferences menu and clicking on the Security tab. Find the option that says “Enable JavaScript” and select it.
Enabling JavaScript in Firefox 2 and Above
If you use Firefox, you can easily enable JavaScript by going to the Tools >Options menu and then selecting the Contents tab. Look for “Enable JavaScript” and select it. Click OK.
JavaScript Errors
Depending on the web page visited and the settings of your browser, you may encounter JavaScript errors from time to time. Most of the time, these errors will be coding errors that you can do nothing about. After all, the programmer is the one who entered the wrong code and you have no way of changing that. However, you can tell your computer to stop displaying JavaScript error codes. In Internet Explorer, go back into Tools >Internet Options and click on the Advanced tab. Under Browsing select “Disable script debugging” (Internet Explorer and Other). Next, remove a check mark (if any) in “Display a notification about every scripting error.”
