Video Cards and Drivers
Your computer needs instructions and communication devices to allow it to use external devices and to perform certain graphic functions like video display.
Video cards, also called video adapters or graphics cards or adapters fit into a slot on the computer’s motherboard and communicate between the computer and certain graphic programs or processes.
New software programs and new hardware devices can both result in incompatibilities on your computer system and might require you to upgrade your video card. Device drivers are small computer programs that your computer uses to communicate with different components of your computer system and different software programs.
Locate your Video Card
To update your video card, you first need to find out some information about your particular card.
- Click on your My Computer icon and select Properties
- Choose the tab marked Device Manager and locate Display Adapters
- Click on the + sign beside this category and you will see the name of your card/driver
- In order to download updates you will need to know this, so make a note of it now.
Download a Driver
The next thing to do is download a new driver. There are several websites and programs that you can use to find new drivers like DriverGenius or DriverAgent, but you can also find them yourself this way:
- Using the name you found in the previous step, open the website of the manufacturer
- On the site find the name of the right driver and choose that link
- There will now be instructions on how to download the driver, follow them completely
- Make sure you save the file to the desktop so you can find it easily later
Install a Driver
Now all you have to do is install the driver
- Follow the same steps you did in the first phase to open the Device Manager and this time select to Remove the driver
- Now, on your desktop, find and click twice on the driver file that you saved in the last step
- An install wizard will open and guide you through the next steps, make sure you complete all the instructions
- Last of all, restart your computer to allow all the changes to take effect and to update the new settings and you should be all set
