I need to install Java to run virtual tours etc but when I just tried it said it couldn’t because my system is 64 bit. What do I do now? I am not very technical and need to be led step by step in order to do anything on the computer. Thanks.
What is Java?
Java technology allows people to perform quite a few functions on the computer. It makes it possible to view images in 3D, play online games, use instant messengers, complete calculations, and more. It can be run from a computer using just about any operating platform.
Java and Virtual Tours
Java is the language that has been built into specific Web browsers to enable certain features. In particular, Java has been used with the following browsers: Netscape, Microsoft, and AOL. The “virtual tours” application utilizes Java capabilities via Java applets to function.
Incompatibility between Applications and 64 Bit
Unfortunately, 64 bit technology is still new enough that the numbers of necessary drivers and modifications to applications and hardware have not yet been incorporated on a wide level. This lack of support creates problems. Therefore, not all software is going to run on computers that feature 64 bit technology. However, if your computer is 64 bit, then you must download the proper Java application. If you were to inadvertently install a version of Java that is not compatible with 64 bit, then it would not work properly or more likely, it would lead to the error message that you are not able to download it.
Installing Java
The download to install JAVA depends upon the operating system that you have installed on your computer. In order to locate the proper download of Java for your operating system, visit the Java web site page at the following link: Java Downloads.
Installing Java on a 64 bit Operating System
If you have one of the following operating systems, Java downloads that are compatible with 64 bit systems are available:
- Solaris (64 bit)
- Linux (64 bit)/ AMD Opteron (64 bit)
- Windows XP (64 bit)
- Windows Server 2003 (64 bit)
