On occasion, someone might inadvertently click the large “X” in the upper right hand corner of the screen when attempting to close a single window. However, this would not lead to the home page opening up after the window closed.

IE 7 add ons can lead to all of the windows closing instead of just a single one. These add ons can also lead to other problems. In fact, there have been several instances of Internet Explorer 7 not working properly as a result of an in compatibility issue due to the add ons with the application. Therefore, you should disable the add ons to see if perhaps this is the problem.
How to Disable Add ons in IE 7?
To disable the add ons, right click on the Internet Explorer 7 icon and select “start without add ons”. You can also do this by following this path:
Click Start→ Click All Programs→ Click Accessories→ Click System Tools→ Click Internet Explorer (no add ons). If this strategy solves the problem and your Internet Explorer 7 no longer performs in the same way, you should set up your IE 7 to run without any add ons.
Simply navigate to the Add on Manager and disable all of the add ons. You can turn each add on back on as you discover that you need it. Then, if you turn one of the add ons back on and Internet Explorer stops working, you will have pinpointed the add on that created the problem.

Lots of spyware and viruses infect computers all of the time. Since these applications can make changes in the way your browser functions, you might also want to check for these with a reliable anti-spyware/anti-virus application. If you have a program, run it now to see if it comes up with anything. If it does, hopefully that will solve the issue for you.
