Phoenix Failsafe
If ever stolen, disable access to your laptop data and remotely take a picture of the thief …
Overview
Mobile computers such as laptops, notebooks, and tablets are vulnerable to theft. Not only is the loss of the device devastating, the loss of the data can be catastrophic! Phoenix Technologies addresses this issue with their Failsafe product. Failsafe allows for the protection, tracking, and management of computers - even when lost or stolen.
Features
- Tracking - Failsafe offers several tracking options allowing you to know exactly where the computer is located. Using any Web browser, you can see a detailed map pinpointing the exact location of the computer.
- Remote Administration and Management - No matter where you are, you can remotely manage Failsafe computers over the Internet including enforcing usage policies, retrieving data, encrypting data, and much more.
- Security - When a Failsafe enabled computer is lost or stolen, you can remotely access the data you need, erase data so that prying eyes can’t see it, or even disable the computer completely.
- Unobtrusive Forensic Tools - Should the computer be stolen, keylogging tools and web camera images can be turned on remotely to gather information about the thief.
Benefits
Failsafe offers numerous benefits including the ability to secure your data in the case of theft by remotely disabling the computer. Tracking features allow you to keep tabs on mobile workers or your children. In addition, should the computer be stolen, this tracking information can be turned over to law enforcement. A variety of forensic tools are further used to assist in tracking down the thief.
How it works
Failsafe incorporates a variety of components into a complete theft-deterrent solution including: a client agent that keeps logs of activities and follows instructions generated by the FailSafe server, a server that issues commands, a web client for monitoring activities and computer locations, and a Secure Communications Center for communications between the server and the client agent.
A variety of location tools are used to determine the whereabouts of a mobile FailSafe computer including GPS activity, IP trace, Caller ID, Wi-Fi data, webcam images, and forensic tools that capture evidence such as keyloggers.
After a computer is stolen, if it’s ever connected to the Internet, owners can protect their data. For example, they can retrieve, encrypt, or erase data as soon as an Internet connection is established. In addition, they can completely disable the laptop if so desired.
Recommendations
FailSafe is a powerful theft deterrent tool that is absolutely essential for mobile devices carrying sensitive data. Even computers located in office buildings should be secured against theft as thieves have targeted traditional businesses and have stolen computers in their quest for personal information.
