How do I set up multiple e-mail accounts in Windows Live Mail?

Celeste StewartIf you’re used to web-based e-mail and are ready to use an e-mail client such as Windows Live Mail, then you’ll need to set up your e-mail accounts. Windows Live Mail allows you to set up numerous e-mail accounts, including web-based accounts, in one place. No more going to Google to check your Gmail, going to Yahoo to check your Yahoo mail, going to MSN to check your Hotmail, and launching Outlook Express to check your POP3 mail. Instead, set up Windows Live Mail with all e-mail accounts and access your e-mail in one user interface.

Doing so is easy, but you will need to know your user name, password, and mail settings such as incoming mail server and outgoing mail server. Go to your individual e-mail accounts to find this detailed information and print out a copy for later reference.

Once you have your information, launch Windows Live Mail and choose Tools, Accounts, Add. If you have previously exported account settings using the Internet Account Files (.iaf) format, you can choose Import by going to Tools, Accounts, Import.

After clicking Add, you must select the type of account that you are setting up, in this case, an e-mail account. Next, type in your e-mail address, password, and display name. Click the Next button and then enter your incoming and outgoing server addresses, enabling any options that your particular e-mail account requires. Click Next and then Finish. Repeat the process for all of your other e-mail accounts.

If you want to make changes to any of your e-mail accounts later, you can do so by going to Tools, Accounts and then selecting the e-mail account followed by Properties. One common change is to select whether or not you want to include the account with each send and receive or synchronization session. For example, if you have an account that you use as a “disposable” account and don’t need to check frequently, you may not want to receive messages sent to this particular account on a regular basis.

Once you have all of your e-mail accounts set up in Windows Live Mail, you’ll notice that each one has its own Inbox, Drafts, Sent Items, Junk Mail, and Deleted Items folders. This keeps each account separate yet readily accessible from within Windows Live Mail. This also provides a shortcut for making changes to the account. Simply right click any e-mail account in the display and then choose Properties. From there, you can make the necessary changes.

Windows Live Mail also features a RSS feed reader and integrates with Messenger and Windows Live Spaces blogs.
