What is the system event log?

Kate Dubensky Windows Vista introduces the Windows Event Log, a service that replaces Event Viewer on Windows NT operating systems with an updated and overhauled design and function. Windows Event Log allows the operating system to report problems and errors that take place during normal use. Over the years, as the utility developed, more features were added such as enhanced support for programs to more easily identify and describe the application that created the event or error, and increased security and communication capabilities.

The Event Log system enables a program to record, publish and analyze the events and errors that it encounters. The log of recorded and processed events is then available for interpretation by a technician or supervisor. The Event Log featured in Windows Vista is even more enhanced to provide specific information about the causes and specifics of events that are helpful to aid technicians and program developers in understanding, diagnosing and treating problems.

Windows Vista takes the idea of the event log to a new level with the introduction of the Vista Event Viewer. Three new features of the Event Viewer make it easy to use and increase its usefulness. It is now specially designed to fix specific identified problems, interpret problems and understand their causes, and the stop small problems from turning in to disasters with Application, System and Security logs.

Even if you aren’t having any specific problems now, the Event Viewer is useful for getting familiar with your system in good operating order so that if trouble strikes you will be able to easily identify the differences. To open Event Viewer, open a Start Search by clicking the Start symbol. Enter the words Event Viewer and, when the dialog box opens, select Event Viewer.

In an administrative account, you can configure the Vista Event Viewer to filter logged information, and to look for specific events occurring across more than one log. This feature is especially useful for troubleshooting recurring problems with custom views and filters. You can also set the event display to personalized, pre-set preferences. In addition to a much more accessible and user-friendly display, events in the Vista Event Viewer can be sorted and programmed with corresponding attached actions. This way, when a particular event occurs, the Event Viewer will automatically run the pre-set action. The Task Schedule Wizard offers additional actions like launching a program, sending an email and showing a message, depending on the user’s preference and the nature of the problem.
