How can I control my child’s Internet habits?

Celeste StewartWhile the Internet is a valuable tool and has become a necessity in most homes, it isn’t always the safest place for children. Predators, cyberbullies, and inappropriate content are just the tip of the iceberg. In addition, concerns about social networking and privacy are also valid. To add to the list are security concerns involving spyware, computer viruses, Trojans and worms - all of which can damage your computer and compromise your family’s financial information. Because of these risks, controlling your child’s Internet usage is essential.

Where to start? First, nothing beats parental supervision. While you can install safeguards, computer-savvy kids may work around them. Instead, keep the computer in a central location where you can see it. Walk by from time to time and look at what’s going on. Are inappropriate pop-up ads filling the screen? Is your child playing a game you consider too violent? Is your child engaged in an Instant Messaging session with a stranger? Is your child creating a MySpace profile and revealing too much information?

Next, educate your child about safety on the Internet. This includes teaching your child about predators, bullies, and privacy. In addition, discuss safe computing habits in regards to the computer’s health such as unsafe downloads or e-mail attachments. Many web sites are available with specific tips addressing online safety. For example, SafeKids.com, ChildrensPartnership.org, and NetSmartz.org each offer huge amounts of information and advice about online safety.

Parental supervision and education are vital in controlling your child’s Internet habits but they often aren’t enough. Kids know how to quickly change screens when they know that you’re headed their way. As you look at the monitor, you’ll see homework or some tame Internet game. As soon as you step away, your child can flip back to the chat room, MySpace page, or other inappropriate Web site.

If you have Windows Vista, you can set up the Parental Controls and restrict Internet usage. This utility lets you restrict web sites, block specific programs, restrict the types of games your child can play, and set up computer time limits. You can also set up regular reports.

Another option is to use third party software to take control of your child’s surfing habits. ParetoLogic Software is a well respected company dedicated to computer security with some of the best virus and malware protection products on the market. This company has developed a free - yes free - parental controls product called PGSurfer. This program lets you restrict web sites, block chat rooms and instant messaging applications, prevent downloads, restrict computer time, and much more. Once installed, you can rest assured knowing that your child’s Internet usage has been restricted. Detailed reports show you exactly who has been visiting or attempting to visit which web sites.
