If you can’t open email attachments in Outlook Express try this tutorial

Your default settings for file asociations in the registry may have been corrupted, you can restore your associations for dozens of file types at the site below. Repair incorrect file extension associations and then your attachments should be able to open again.

Another possibility applicable to Outlook Express is that potentially dangerous attachment types are being blocked automatically. In fact this option is auto-enabled for the latest installs and upgrades. If you go to Tools, then Options and then Security you will see this option: “Do not allow attachments to be opened or saved that could potentially be a virus.”
At your own risk you can deselect this and see if your attachments will open. WARNING: Be absolutely sure that you trust any attachment before opening it. Heres a great tutrial on how to deal with this very case: http://www.steve.maurer.net/tutorials/email_tutorials/oe6_attachments.htm

On both my internet and outlook; when I try to open attachments I have to hit the open button about 10 times and it finally opens. I get the “internet.xls, document.xls, and.xls no association” thing. I have tried some of the options listed on your site, however am not computer savvy. I need to know how to set things so attachments open without having to do this.
Thanks
Whitney
Whitney,
When you click open 10 times, does the attachment then open multiple times? If so, this could simply mean the problem isn’t the attachment, but your computer’s processing speed or memory available.
Try this: Right click the attachment and select ‘Open’ then wait at least one minute. If the file opens, it isn’t the number of times you are clicking open, simply the time it takes you to click it. The culprit is likely to be too many processes or anything else like spyware or viruses that eat up your computer’s resources.
Right-clicking will also give you the option of selecting ‘Open With’ which gives you the power to determine a specific program to open the file. If selecting the appropriate program from the list allows the file to open on the first try and the simple ‘Open’ command did not, then it appears you need to look into setting default programs for file types.
Always Smiling,
Elizabeth
