With modern operating systems, multiple accounts are quite common, allowing users to have either full or limited privileges.

Therefore, most computers can be set up with normal user privileges and administrative privileges. The primary purpose behind this strategy is to create an operating system that is more resistant to attacks from viruses, adware, and other forms of malware. The user with root privileges has absolute power or complete access over the operating system and is known as the root account.

With unix, linux, and similar operating systems, the special user account for administrative purposes is known as the superuser or root. Therefore, the privileges that they hold are referred to as root privileges. With windows operating systems, this special user account is typically referred to as system administration.

Root privileges provide the computer user with full privileges, rights, and permissions while in any mode on the computer. Such privileges provide the user with the ability to change many features that the ordinary user cannot. They allow the user to install programs, uninstall programs, change file privileges or ownership, add users, and more.

Additionally, root privileges provide the user with the ability to determine whether or not other users can read, write, or execute files and directories. This is known as granting or revoking access permissions. It also allows the root account to grant access to privileges that are typically reserved for the root account.

In most cases, it is wisest for the individual with root privileges to have access to a normal user account as well. This eliminates most of the possibility of creating undesirable changes in the system inadvertently.
