Linux Hosting get better with Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP

Linux has become a popular option for the hosting of web servers since the software project was started as a hobby more then a decade ago.

One of the most popular hosting configurations for large dynamic or complex websites is known as LAMP, an acronym for Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP.

Linux is the operating system that will run the physical hardware of the server. It is an open source project; the source code that is used to generate the executable program is available for anyone who wants to download it free of charge.

There are several major distributions of Linux packaging massive number of other open source programs into a Linux based operating system. Unlike Microsoft Windows these are usually available as a free download or on CD/DVD for a small fee.

The other open source projects and software play a major role in hosting a website in a LAMP configuration.

The 'A' is another very large open source project the Apache HTTP Server. This piece of software is hands down the most popular web server going. It is able to provide high volume hosting of large sites if it has been properly configured. It also has the ability to host scripted dynamic web pages in a very large number of languages.

Most often it's the scripting language that provides the final 'P' of the acronym. PHP, Python, Perl all fitting in that spot.

Depending on the programmers preference or the project requirements just about any  language can be used; whether it's a scripting language or one that is compiled. Often for rapid development a language such as PHP may be used because it provides a large standard library of functions to provide access to a variety of databases and utility code.

Unlike most of the other software in a typical LAMP server, MySQL is not strictly open source, but it is available for free. For most light weight database driven sites MySQL provides a stable way to use an SQL database. There are many other databases which implement the SQL standard as well, such as the open source PostgreSQL.

Linux is a robust option for hosting websites of any size. With the massive amount of open source software available for free it can also be a much cheaper option when compared with other commercial software.
